Disability advocate Michael Prince named to Order of Canada

January 7, 2025 -

Over his 38 years at UVic, the acting dean of the Faculty of Human and Social Development (HSD) has built a reputation as a social and public policy expert who cares about equity issues, from child poverty and housing to veterans’ supports and disability rights. On Dec 18, Governor General Mary Simon honoured Prince’s long career by making him a member of the Order of Canada.

Day in the Life: Kim Fawthorpe

If you’ve taken a seat anywhere on the University of Victoria campus, you’ve benefited from the work of Kim Fawthorpe and her team. Fawthorpe is manager of Interior Modification Services in Facilities Management, where she and her team of five interior designers look after all the furniture and interior design needs on campus—from outfitting a new space to remodelling and updating a previously used facility.

Web of support fosters new leadership in inclusive education

For Dominique Rochefort, a citizen of the Métis Nation, the journey to become an empowered teacher was mined with self-doubts and life challenges. Rochefort graduates with a UVic BEd in elementary teacher education—and will receive a Maxwell Cameron award from the BC Teachers’ Federation for the outstanding quality of her practice teaching, her top GPA and engagement in social justice.
