A University of Victoria doctoral student visiting an observatory in Chile unexpectedly became a participant in the observation of the first recorded gravitational wave signature caused by a neutron star collision – a discovery that is transformational to our understanding of the universe.

Scuba divers count fish for science

A new research program led by marine ecologist John Volpe and grad student Stefania Gorgopa is a great opportunity for scuba divers to get involved as citizen scientists. The UVic researchers are turning to the local sport diving community for help conducting surveys of marine fish populations around Victoria and the Gulf Islands.

Indigenous law graduate student wins top Canadian research award

UVic Law PhD student Aaron Mills was awarded the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Talent award. The award is given to a single student each year across all the disciplines of the humanities and social sciences in Canada whose research "brings forward ideas that help us understand and improve the world around us." Mills' work is at the forefront of the movement to restore and revitalize Indigenous systems of law.

Indigenous law graduate student wins top Canadian research award

Mills’ work is at the forefront of the movement to restore and revitalize Indigenous systems of law, one of the central recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission report.

"There's a concept in Nuu-chah-nulth culture called hishuk ish tsawalk," says Marcena Wika Louie, one of the first cohort of the Indigenous Communities Counselling Psychology (ICCP) program graduating in November. "It means everything is connected, everything is one. That's the basis of my holistic approach to counselling."

On the road with new travel-writing field school

Heather Clark, a veteran tour guide and former publications coordinator for the European Association for International Education, has spent upwards of six months a year for the past 16 years traveling the world. That's in addition to completing two degrees here at UVic: a BA in Hispanic studies and an MFA in writing. Now she's putting all that experience to work with her new company and a proposed travel-writing field school for the writing department.
