New podcast series explores the realities of dementia caregiving

When Ashley Sharma graduated from high school, she didn’t imagine that within a few years, she would become her grandmother’s primary caregiver. Sharma’s story is one of four episodes featured in the second season of the University of Victoria podcast, Call to Mind, which launches on Jan. 30 on all podcast apps, including Spotify and Apple Podcasts, and on the website CalltoMindPodcast.com.

Emily Haigh: Bridging Indigenous knowledge with mainstream psychology

A huge, historic charitable gift made national news in October 2024 when Bruce McKean and his Waverley House Foundation donated more than $200 million to the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) for a secure care and recovery building in Toronto. But a smaller gift the University of Victoria political science alumnus made to UVic has had an outsized impact.

Disability advocate Michael Prince named to Order of Canada

Over his 38 years at UVic, the acting dean of the Faculty of Human and Social Development (HSD) has built a reputation as a social and public policy expert who cares about equity issues, from child poverty and housing to veterans’ supports and disability rights. On Dec 18, Governor General Mary Simon honoured Prince’s long career by making him a member of the Order of Canada.

A new study published in the Marine Ecology Progress Series highlights a resilient sea sponge’s response to its changing environment - captured rare footage by Ocean Networks Canada (ONC) seafloor cameras off the BC coast for over four years, marking the longest continuous recording of these ancient but remarkably active animals in the wild.
