Help Desk expands services and locations

October 27, 2014 - The Ring

The Computer Help Desk has expanded its operations to provide more knowledgeable staff, extended hours and twice the number of locations. Faculty, staff and students can now contact the Help Desk by telephone and email from 8 a.m.-11 p.m. weekdays, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. weekends, and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. on stat holidays; and visit any one of eight physical locations.

Cast your municipal ballot at the SUB on Nov. 6

Voting in this year's municipal election just got a bit easier. Thanks to a multi-year campaign by the UVic Students’ Society, advance polls for Saanich, Oak Bay and Victoria are coming to UVic. Students, faculty, staff and other eligible voters can cast ballots on Thursday, Nov. 6 from noon to 4:00 p.m. in the SUB Michele Pujol Room. The UVSS is also encouraging informed voting by hosting an all-candidates fair on Wednesday, Oct. 29 (11a.m. to 3p.m., Michele Pujol Room) and a mayoral debate on Oct. 30 (2pm, at Vertigo in the SUB).

Find out about international opportunities, hear stories of international experiences and meet some of our international students and researchers from around the globe. Highlights of the week include the International Opportunities Fair for students who want to learn about studying abroad, and a screening of The Dialogue, a documentary that explores the elements of meaningful intercultural dialogue and cultural identity.

Rugby coach honoured with community bursary

Julianne Zussman, assistant coach for the University of Victoria Vikes Women's rugby team, has been awarded the $2,000 Pacific Western Brewing (PWB) Community Foundation Hometown Heroes bursary. "The Pacific Western Brewing Hometown Heroes Program is designed to support the goals of the 2015 Canada Winter Games," said Velox Rugby Football Club Director Marlene Donaldson. "These goals are all about sportsmanship, leadership and citizenship. Today is also about recognizing an outstanding athlete who believes in going for gold and puts down her very best every day."

President Cassels emphasizes need to sharpen focus and build on strengths

UVic has made some big strides in the last few years—in terms of national and international recruitment, research, and graduates’ success—but that’s not to say we’re sheltered from demographic change, competition, and the sustainability challenges facing post-secondary institutions, UVic President Jamie Cassels said during an Oct. 7 Campus Update session.

UVic United Way Campaign off to fast start

The UVic United Way is proud to announce that only two weeks after our kick-off on October 6 we are more than two-thirds of the way to our fundraising goal of $250,000. UVic is counting on the support of the entire campus community as the campaign pushes to meet its goal. During the month of October, all UVic employees received emails detailing the new online donation system used this year. Advances in mouse proteomics

October 22, 2014 - The Ring

Proteomics—the study of proteins found in human cells and how they regulate their actions—is one of the most promising areas for developing new therapies for human diseases. Mouse models are the mainstay of most biomedical research, but researchers are limited by the small volumes of blood that can be sampled from live animals. Now, using $1.2 million in new funding from Genome BC and Genome Canada, the UVic-Genome BC Proteomics Centre and spinoff company MRM Proteomics Inc. will continue their work to develop new tools to help medical researchers measure the concentration of individual proteins in mouse plasma.

Jack Hodgins' writing nets major Royal Society medal

Retired professor Jack Hodgins (writing) is the winner of the Royal Society of Canada’s Lorne Pierce Medal. The award noted that Hodgins is “internationally acclaimed for his achievements in both the novel and short story forms, admired for the complex morality of his subjects, as well as his structural and linguistic ability” and that his “imaginative fiction masterfully explores the history, the people and the places of the coast of British Columbia.” Hodgins has also received the Governor General’s Award for Fiction, the Commonwealth Prize, and the Order of Canada.

Rutherford Medal for UVic astrophysicist Sara Ellison

Sara Ellison (physics and astronomy) has been awarded the Rutherford Memorial Medal in Physics from the Royal Society of Canada for her outstanding work in astrophysics. Ellison leads several international research programs that are using the world’s leading telescopes to understand how galaxies form and evolve. Her research has appeared in more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and includes numerous high-impact discoveries in the field of extragalactic observational astronomy.

Proteomics pioneer to chair Genome BC-McGill collaboration

October 17, 2014 - The Ring

Dr. Christoph Borchers, director of the UVic-Genome BC Proteomics Centre, has been jointly appointed as the Proteomics Chair for the Jewish General Hospital at McGill University in Montreal. Borchers is an expert in the use of mass spectrometry to study the structure and function of proteins. At the UVic centre, Borchers directs a research program that applies proteomics technologies to areas such as medical diagnostics, drug development, forestry and alternative fuels.

Giles named Distinguished Fellow of NZ association of economists

October 17, 2014 - The Ring

Dr. David Giles (economics) was recently named a Distinguished Fellow of the New Zealand Association of Economists. The award was made at the 2014 Conference of the Association, in Auckland, New Zealand, where Giles also presented the invited A.W.H. Phillips Memorial Lecture. Dr. Giles is only the 13th economist to be named a Distinguished Fellow of the NZAE in its 55-year history.
