Gender-inclusive signs coming to washrooms

Single-stall washrooms will soon be identified with gender-inclusive universal signing as part of the university’s continuing commitment to meet the needs of a diverse campus community. More than 75 washrooms across campus are being posted with new signs to indicate what facilities are located inside—toilets, urinals, change tables, showers, and whether they are wheelchair accessible. The signing project is expected to be finished by the end of October.

Prevention by intervention

Bystander intervention training has been added to the roster of initiatives aimed at preventing sexualized violence. Offered through Student Affairs’ new Office of Student Life, new Bringing in the Bystander workshops help students learn practical skills to defuse potentially unsafe situations from spiraling into sexualized violence or sexual harassment.

UVic researchers’ recommendations to the Marijuana Task Force

As the federal government moves forward with legalization of cannabis, many lessons can be learned from the Canadian experience with legalization of alcohol. As 13 researchers from the University of Victoria’s Centre for Addictions Research of BC (CARBC) point out in their co-authored submission to the Task Force on Marijuana Legalization and Regulation in Canada—published today as a publicly available research bulletin—cannabis, like alcohol, is no ordinary commodity. A delicate balance is needed between the pressures for liberalization and addressing potential public and individual harms.

How to tag a tiger shark

This summer UVic geographer Phil Dearden assisted an international research team with the placement of the first-ever satellite tracking tag on a tiger shark in the Philippines' Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park—a UNESCO world heritage site—and is now tracking its movements in real time. Sharks play a crucial role in marine biodiversity and the new research will have significant impact on shark conservation in Southeast Asia and the Philippines.

Development of syphilis vaccine one step closer

August 16, 2016 - Media release

An international team of scientists co-led by a University of Victoria researcher is one step closer to a vaccine for syphilis. Co-leaders UVic microbiologist Caroline Cameron and University of Washington’s Sheila Lukehart received a $2.3 million grant (USD) from the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health. The grant will allow them to continue to make headway on vaccine development.
