Fears that “vaping” is a gateway to tobacco smoking are unfounded, shows a comprehensive review of available evidence on the harms and benefits of electronic or e-cigarettes and vapour devices, released today by UVic's Centre for Addictions Research of BC (CARBC) in a report called “Clearing the Air.”

Faculty of Education appoints an Indigenous Resurgence Coordinator

Chaw-win-is is the recently appointed Indigenous Resurgence Coordinator within the Faculty of Education. “This position and others initiatives like it across Canada,” says Chaw-win-is, “are a result of the on-going efforts of Indigenous peoples and non-Indigenous allies all across Canada who have been generating awareness about colonization within the education system.”

Looking out for our heroes

Firefighters, search and rescue workers and paramedics put their lives on the line for our safety every day, yet we tend to take their health for granted. “They’re so busy taking care of others, they sometimes don’t pay enough attention to taking care of themselves,” says Lynneth Stuart-Hill, an occupational physiologist in UVic’s School of Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education. Stuart-Hill’s research looks for ways to improve working conditions for first responders, whom she calls “occupational athletes.”
