New funding from the BC government for CanAssist will expand services for seniors living with dementia, and children and youth with special needs, including a grant of $3M to continue the CanStayHome initiative and another $1.5M to produce and supply existing assistive technologies.

Queenswood legacy lives on in salvaged objects

In preparation for building renovations at the Queenswood site, several hundred items—fixtures, healthcare and commercial kitchen equipment, plumbing fixtures, millwork, appliances, even dishes and hot water tanks—have been salvaged for re-use by a variety of departments and off-campus organizations, including UVic Food Services, the University Club, Bamfield Marine Centre and Beacon Community Services.

New research by UVic geographer Chris Darimont suggests that modern-day trophy hunting is status-seeking behaviour that can be traced back to our hunter-gatherer ancestors. The theory, supported by evidence and inference from evolutionary anthropology, shows a similar pattern in hunter-gatherers across the globe.

Prof. Jamie Cassels reappointed to second term as president and vice-chancellor

Prof. Jamie Cassels has been reappointed to a second five-year term as president and vice-chancellor of the University of Victoria, effective July 1, 2018. The appointment was unanimously approved by the Board of Governors, following a unanimous recommendation from the Committee for the Appointment of the President.
