New collaboration in proteomics

Dr. Christoph Borchers, director of the UVic-Genome BC Proteomics Centre, has been jointly appointed as the Proteomics Chair for the Jewish General Hospital at McGill University in Montreal. Borchers is an expert in the use of mass spectrometry to study the structure and function of proteins. At the UVic centre, Borchers directs a research program that applies proteomics technologies to areas such as medical diagnostics, drug development, forestry and alternative fuels.

Indigenous law research chair

New CRC excited about combined degree program in Indigenous and Canadian law UVic Law professor Dr. John Borrows secured one of the most prestigious research professorships in the country when he was officially named Canada Research Chair in Indigenous Law on Thursday, Oct. 16.

Underwater archaeological discovery

Using some of the newest technologies in underwater archaeology, Quentin Mackie (anthropology) and Alison Proctor (engineering) may have discovered one of the oldest archaeological finds in Canada. Right now all they know for sure is that they’ve discovered a line of basketball-sized rocks on the seafloor. Those rocks may well add to the mounting evidence about the ingenuity of an ice age people who lived and thrived on the west coast of Canada while much of Europe was still under ice. It’s a tantalizing possibility.
