New research led by researchers at the University of Victoria raises serious concerns about the ability of marine protected areas (MPAs) to effectively protect wide-ranging iconic species, such as sharks and rays.

This was the first year I’ve participated in the Provost’s Diversity Research Forum. The theme this year, “Privilege & Prejudice: Assumptions in Learning” meant little to me before attending this event. I’m privileged in my life. I can attend class without fear of judgement based on my skin colour or sexuality. I attended the event in the hope of writing something meaningful about the discussion but thinking little about my experience with privilege and prejudice. I left the forum with a new attitude towards assumptions and prejudice in the classroom.

When UVic engineering professor Dr. Reuven Gordon describes the biomedical engineering technique of listening to and recording the “voice” of proteins, it sounds a lot like a modern take on Horton Hears a Who, Dr. Seuss’s children’s story of an elephant who hears a voice calling from a microscopic dust speck. “Everything small has resonances. Everything has a voice,” Gordon says of the protein molecules measuring a single nanometer in size—the building blocks of life that are a million times smaller than an ant and emit sound at a frequency a million times higher than the human ear can hear.

If you weren’t among the several hundred faculty, staff and students who packed the BEC auditorium for the Dec. 4 Campus Update session, there are still good opportunities to be involved in the two major initiatives discussed that day. The Dec. 4 event, hosted by Vice-President Academic and Provost Valerie Kuehne, was the most recent in the regular series of updates bringing university leaders to the podium to brief the campus community on major initiatives and opportunities. The Campus Update sessions, Kuehne stressed, “are also an opportunity for us to hear from you,” acknowledging the need to keep communications open and support a respectful and collegial environment.

Advances in mouse proteomics

Proteomics—the study of proteins found in human cells and how they regulate their actions—is one of the most promising areas for developing new therapies for human diseases. Mouse models are the mainstay of most biomedical research, but researchers are limited by the small volumes of blood that can be sampled from live animals. Now, using $1.2 million in new funding from Genome BC and Genome Canada, the UVic-Genome BC Proteomics Centre and spinoff company MRM Proteomics Inc. will continue their work to develop new tools to help medical researchers measure the concentration of individual proteins in mouse plasma.

Sara Ellison wins Rutherford Medal

The Ring

Sara Ellison (physics and astronomy) has been awarded the Rutherford Memorial Medal in Physics from the Royal Society of Canada for her outstanding work in astrophysics. Ellison leads several international research programs that are using the world’s leading telescopes to understand how galaxies form and evolve. Her research has appeared in more than 100 peer-reviewed articles and includes numerous high-impact discoveries in the field of extragalactic observational astronomy.
