National award for UVic VP Charette

University of Victoria Vice President External Relations Carmen Charette has been named this year’s recipient of the national Walter Hitschfeld Award from the Canadian Association of University Research Administrators. The prestigious award is presented to “an individual who has demonstrated an exceptional impact on the enhancement of the research environment in Canada.” Previous Hitschfeld winners include David Strangway, former president of the Canada Foundation for Innovation and President Emeritus of the University of Toronto and UBC, and Arthur Carty, former national science advisor to the prime minister and former president of the National Research Council.

Enhanced safety and quality of life are goals of pan-Canadian study on older drivers Tests currently used by doctors to assess a senior’s ability to keep driving need to be improved, a long-term study of older drivers is revealing. “The currently available guidelines for physicians are not doing a very good job of identifying people at risk,” says Dr. Holly Tuokko, a psychologist with UVic’s Centre on Aging. “We need a better set of tools.”

Grad casts new light at a nanoscale

Researchers all over the world dream of making new discoveries in well-established fields, but engineering grad Ana Zehtabi-Oskuie’s path has gone straight to the edge of an emerging field. While studying Electrical Engineering at the University of Tehran, Zehtabi-Oskuie became intrigued by optical trapping, a method pioneered in 2009 by electrical engineering professor Dr. Reuven Gordon, a team of UVic grad students and Dr. Romain Quidant at the Europe-based Institute of Photonic Sciences.

Smart oceans

UVic’s world-leading Ocean Networks Canada embarks on a bold new phase of ocean monitoring. The British Columbia coast is about to become the “smartest” on the planet. Ocean Networks Canada (ONC), an initiative of the University of Victoria, is partnering with Western Economic Diversification Canada and IBM Canada on a three-year multimillion dollar project known as Smart Oceans BC. Smart Oceans BC builds on the know-how and proven technologies of VENUS and NEPTUNE—the world’s most advanced cabled ocean observatories—to develop and install a series of mini-observatories, high-frequency radars, and automated vessel information systems at key points along the BC coast.

Indigenous place names

Long before settler culture attached the names of explorers, businessmen and political leaders to the mountains, rivers and landscape we now call Vancouver Island, the traditional names used by First Nations carried a wealth of information about those places—information that anthropology student Amy Becker has been working to preserve. Becker, recipient of a 2013-14 Jamie Cassels Undergrad Research Award (JCURA), explains “Indigenous place names are embedded in the culture, landscape, language and identities of the people who use them.”

It’s game night at the local rink and cheering parents pack the stands as young players churn up and down the ice. Every scoring chance is hailed with roars of support. The barn falls eerily silent though, as one young skater racing for a puck loses an edge and slides headlong into the boards.

EcoCar 2 heads to final competition

UVic’s EcoCAR 2 team of engineering students aren’t just getting hands-on experience while they study—they’re getting their hands dirty. Since April 2011, close to 60 students in mechanical, electrical, computer and software engineering, and business have been hard at work—using multi-million dollar dSPACE, Siemens and MathWorks modelling and testing tools, and a mechanic’s full suite of wrenches and ratchets—re-designing and retrofitting a GM-donated 2013 Chevrolet Malibu Eco into a next generation plug-in hybrid electric vehicle.

Research impact caught on video

Two UVic graduate students have been rewarded for their creative use of video to tell the story of how their academic research is impacting the world. Genevieve von Petzinger and Bernadette Perry are among 25 winners of the national Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC) video contest Research for a Better Life: The Storytellers Challenge, involving universities across Canada. The challenge required students to distill their research into a compelling three minutes of narrated video, describing how their SSHRC-funded research is making a difference in the lives of Canadians.

Boyd named Distinguished Professor

If you don’t know what it means to be named a UVic Distinguished Professor, don’t fret: they’re a rare breed. The newest recipient, Dr. Susan Boyd, is only the 13th UVic professor to receive the award—the highest academic honour UVic can bestow on faculty—since its creation in 2002. Boyd’s activist presence on substantive social justice and marginalization issues has led to a tremendous scholarly output.

Canada Research Chairs announced

Improving aircraft design, understanding the ocean’s critical role in climate change, and finding new ways to deal with vast amounts of medical imaging data—these are the pressing societal challenges being tackled by the University of Victoria’s three newest Canada Research Chairs. The three UVic chairs were announced on March 28 by Ed Holder, Minister of State for Science and Technology as part of a national announcement of 59 new chairholders across the country.
