The Ring is the University of Victoria’s community newspaper. Its purpose is:

• to advance the mission and objectives of the university as articulated in the strategic plan
• to inform members of the campus community about news and events of interest to them and
• to help build a sense of community among faculty, staff and students at UVic.

Matthew Thibodeau will be crossing the Farquhar Auditorium stage this November to receive his Bachelor of Science degree—and if he maintains the pace he set for himself at UVic, you might see him sprint across. During his undergraduate studies, Thibodeau ran on the Vikes track team, did several co-op terms in Heather Buckley’s lab, won UVic’s 2022 Honours Fest competition, earned co-authorship on four research papers, and is first author on a research paper due to be published soon.

New look for UVic diplomas

For the first time in 27 years, University of Victoria parchments—or the diplomas issued to its graduates—will have a new look. Students graduating this Fall will be the first class to receive the new design.

Passion for robotics inspires success

Alec Krawciw had the highest academic standing of any student graduating from UVic with a bachelor’s degree this spring and also found time to lead a student engineering team, earn a minor in software engineering, and volunteer in the community. Krawciw found plenty of ways to follow his passion in robotics during his time at UVic, including a co-op in which he designed and built a prototype electric hydro-foiling catamaran from scratch.
