Department Photo 2010

The department has flourished under the leadership of Colin Wood, Mike Edgell, Dan Smith, and Phil Dearden. From teaching a few hundred undergraduate and several honours students in the early 1960s, at present, faculty members teach and mentor some 1,250 undergraduates and nearly 100 MA, MSc, or PhD students.

In recognition of the department's striving for excellence throughout its youthful, half-century history, it is important to note that past and present faculty have served as the President of the Canadian Association of Geographers, won major research and life-time achievement awards from national and international organizations, and even shared in a Nobel Prize.

Staff members have likewise distinguished themselves in serving the local community, and both undergraduate and graduate students are increasingly winning major national research awards and sharing their geographical knowledge abroad.
