Dr. Jean Downie Dey Student Mobility Award*

One or more awards are given to undergraduate students in the Faculty of Education to travel within Canada or internationally to attend or present at a conference, workshop or travel to support their studies.

Application forms are available on the Faculty of Education's website and must be submitted by May 31st to the Associate Dean Undergraduate Programs, Faculty of Education.

Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Orca Book Publishers Student Mobility Award in Teacher Education

One or more awards are given to undergraduate students in the Faculty of Education Teacher Education program to enhance the student learning experience through, but not limited to, field schools, conferences, practicum placements, etc. The award will also assist students with the costs of travel and fees associated with their activity. Preference will be given to students in spring practicum placements.

Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Education.

Enbridge Travel Award for Engineering and Computer Science Students

Value: $1,500 | Number: Varies

One or more awards of $1,500 each are given to undergraduate students in the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science to assist with relocation costs associated with undertaking a co-op work term anywhere in Canada excluding the Capital Regional District (CRD). Preference is for students who identify as women, Black, Indigenous or People of Colour.

Approval of the recipients is made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science.

CRD municipalities: Victoria, Oak Bay, Saanich, Central Saanich, North Saanich, Sooke, Highlands, Metchosin, Colwood, Langford, Esquimalt, Sidney, View Royal and the electoral areas of Juan de Fuca, Salt Spring Island and the Southern Gulf Islands.

The application must be made through completion of the in-course scholarship application on UVic Online Tools. Instructions on how to apply can be found on the SAFA website.

Del Meidinger Travel Scholarship

Value: $1,500 | Number: 1

One scholarship of $1,500 is awarded annually to an academically outstanding undergraduate student in an Honours or Major program in the Department of Biology, to assist with travel costs associated with undertaking a co-op work term anywhere outside of their home community. The work term must focus on either sustainable forest management or forest ecology.

Applications must be submitted to the Co-operative Education Office (coopawards@uvic.ca) by:

  • October 15 for a co-op placement that takes place September to December,
  • February 15 for a co-op placement that takes place January to April or
  • June 15 for a co-op placement that takes place May to August.

Students may receive this award more than once.

Approval of the recipient is made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Biology.

First disbursement 2023 Summer Session (May to August co-op period).

Lorene Kennedy Field Course Award*

One or more awards are given to offset additional costs required for field-based courses offered by the School of Environmental Studies or the Restoration of Natural Systems Program. Awards are given to full-time or part-time undergraduate student who are declared majors or minors in the School of Environmental Studies, graduate students in the School of Environmental Studies and students in the Restoration of Natural Systems program. 

Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Environmental Studies.

Ailsa and Roger Bishop Travel Award in Music*

One or more awards are given to undergraduate students in the School of Music to enhance the student learning experience through travel in support of research and/or creative activity. This activity may include, but not be limited to, participation in field schools, exhibitions, performances or presentations.

Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Music.

Audain Travel Award

One award of $7,500 will be given to a full-time undergraduate or graduate student in the Department of Visual Arts to enhance the student learning experience through travel or project/research costs in support of broadening the student’s knowledge of historical and contemporary art. This activity may include, but not be limited to travel, accommodation, admission fees to museums, galleries, etc., and/or participation in exhibitions, performances, workshops or presentations. Preference is given to students who are using the fund for travel.

Applications must include a brief description of their reason for travel (50 word max), a letter of endorsement from a faculty member, a budget detailing the cost of the travel and/or research project, and a resume of the student’s work.

Approval of the recipient will be made by either the Senate Committee on Awards or the Faculty of Graduate Studies Graduate Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the Department of Visual Arts. Application forms are available from the Department of Visual Arts office and must be submitted by August 15th.

Jeffrey Rubinoff Scholar in Art as a Source of Knowledge Travel Award*

The award is to cover travel, food and accommodation costs (the “Forum Costs”) for the recipient of the Jeffrey Rubinoff Scholar in Arts as a Source of Knowledge Fellowship and two or more undergraduate or graduate students to attend the Company of Ideas Forum (the “Forum”) which is conducted annually by the Jeffrey Rubinoff Foundation at the Jeffrey Rubinoff Sculpture Park (JRSP).

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Art History and Visual Studies.

If no eligible undergraduate or graduate students are available in a given year, recipients may be chosen from the Department of Visual Arts.

Johann Strauss Foundation Scholarship*

Two scholarships are awarded to assist undergraduate or graduate students registered in the School of Music to study music in Austria. At least one of these two annual scholarships must be for study at the Mozarteum in Salzburg.

Applicants must:

  • be Canadian citizens or landed immigrants
  • provide documentation demonstrating the applicant’s registration at an acceptable institution.
  • audition

Graduating students are also eligible for this award.

  • In the case of an undergraduate student, approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Music.
  • In the case of a graduate student, approval of the recipient will be made by the Faculty of Graduate Studies Graduate Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the School of Music.

Johann Strauss Foundation - Joseph and Melitta Kandler Scholarship*

Supplemental scholarships may be awarded to the undergraduate or graduate recipients of the Johann Strauss Foundation Scholarships. 

Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Music.

L.E. Frances Druce Student Travel Award*

One or more awards are made to academically outstanding full-time undergraduate or graduate students in the School of Music for the enhancement of the student learning experience through travel, in support of research/creative activity and may include field schools, exhibitions, performances or presentations. Preference will be given to women students.

Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the School of Music or the Faculty of Graduate Studies Graduate Awards Committee.

Martin Bonham and Lloyd Howard Travel to Italy Award*

One or more awards are given to undergraduate or graduate students in the School of Music who are travelling to Italy to broaden their knowledge of western classical music. This activity may include, but is not limited to, travel, accommodation, admission fees, archival research, galleries, language training, and/or participation in exhibitions, courses, performances, workshops, conferences or presentations. Preference is for students using the funding to directly support travel costs. Applicants must include a brief description (50-100 words) of their reason for travel.

Undergraduate students apply through the on-line application via Online Tools under Student Awards and Financial Aid. Graduate students must submit an application to the School of Music Office by September 15.

Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by either the Senate Committee on Awards or the Faculty of Graduate Studies Graduate Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the School of Music.

Anne and Ivor Williams Spain and Latin America Scholarship*

One or more scholarships of at least $1,000 each are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students pursuing a degree in Hispanic or Latin American Studies who are registered in a study abroad program, field school, experiential learning opportunity, or co-op work-term in Spain or Latin America.

Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Hispanic & Italian Studies.

Chinese Consolidated Benevolent Association of Victoria Travel Award*

An award is given to a student who has completed at least 4 courses on China and/or overseas Chinese studies and who is undertaking a study of Chinatowns outside of the City of Victoria. The general university requirement that the award recipient must return to the University of Victoria in the next regular session and enroll in a full program does not apply to this travel award.

Dart Coon Club Chinese Freemasons of Victoria China Studies Travel Award*

An award is given to a student who has completed at least 4 courses on China and/or overseas Chinese studies and who is undertaking a study tour of China. The general University requirement that the award recipient must return to the University of Victoria in the next regular session and enroll in a full program does not apply to this travel award. The purpose of this award is to stimulate the study of geography of China and to provide funds for the organization of a study tour of China.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Pacific and Asian Studies.

Dennis, Jerome, and Peter Zachary Award in Ukrainian Studies*

One or more awards of at least $1,000 each are awarded to undergraduate students of Ukrainian language and/or culture courses. Recipients will be nominated by the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies.

Preference will be given to students who, in descending order of priority:
(a) are continuing their studies of Ukrainian language and/or culture in the summer academic term through an accredited program in Ukraine.
(b) were academically outstanding in a Ukrainian language and/or culture course in the previous term.

Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies.

Elias Mandel Prize for Study Abroad in Hispanic and Italian Studies*

One or more prizes are awarded to undergraduate students to assist with tuition costs and/or travel costs relating to studying abroad through courses, field schools or programs offered or recognized by the Department of Hispanic and Italian Studies.

I-witness Field School Travel Award

All registered students undergraduate or graduate in the bi-annual I-witness Field School will receive a travel award to assist with the field school program and travel costs. Award amounts will be determined by the director of the I-witness Field School based on available funding.

Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies.

Louise and Peter Fothergill-Payne Travel Scholarship*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students registered in any program in the Department of Hispanic and Italian Studies to assist with international travel for:

  • the purposes of a research project or course work related to their area of study, or
  • study abroad in a program supported by the Department.

The award must be used for one of these ends and may be awarded to the same student on more than one occasion. In the case of candidates of equal merit, preference will be given to projects or studies abroad that involve the Spanish Golden Age. Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Hispanic and Italian Studies.

Zena and Chaim Katz Family Award for Holocaust Studies*

All registered undergraduate students in the bi-annual I-Witness Field School will receive a travel award to assist with the travel costs of the field school (travel to, from and within Europe). Award amounts will be determined by the director of the I-Witness Field School based on available funding.

Elias Mandel Prize for Study Abroad in Humanities*

One or more prizes are awarded to undergraduate students in the Faculty of Humanities who are studying abroad through courses, field schools or programs offered or recognized by the Faculty of Humanities. Students must submit a budget and budget justification for amount requested (maximum $6,000), an unofficial transcript, a statement of no more than 500 words describing the purpose of the study abroad program and its relevance to the student's program of study, and two letters of support from appropriate instructors familiar with the student's academic work. The deadline for applications is March 31st (if the deadline falls on a weekend, the application is due the following Monday). All application materials should be addressed to the Faculty of Humanities, Associate Dean Academic. 

Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Humanities.

Faculty of Humanities Travel and Learning Scholarship

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students in the Faculty of Humanities to assist with regional, national or international travel outside of Southern Vancouver Island (defined as the area south of Nanaimo and not including any of the Gulf Islands) in relation to a UVic course in the Faculty of Humanities. Coursework can be part of an exchange, study abroad, field school or Co-op placement in a program supported by a program in the faculty.

Students must submit a budget for the amount requested (maximum $1,000), a statement of no more than 350 words describing the purpose of the coursework and its relevance to the student's program of study and one letter of support from appropriate instructors familiar with the student's academic work. The deadline for applications is March 1 (for summer travel) and June 1 (for fall or winter travel). All application materials should be addressed and submitted to the Associate Dean Academic, Faculty of Humanities.

Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Faculty of Humanities.

Grace and Harry Hickman Scholarship*

Scholarships will be awarded to assist students to study French at a university in any region or country where French is the dominant language and where an immersive language and cultural experience is present. Applicants must be registered in a full time program, including at least one course in French, at the University of Victoria, and intend to study at a university where the language of instruction is French for one or more semesters and to return to the University of Victoria to complete the program requirements. The scholarship will be paid upon receipt of documents demonstrating the student’s registration at an acceptable institution. Students in any year of study are eligible. 

Written applications, including details of the proposed program, are to be submitted to the Department of French by April 1 of the academic year preceding the proposed study at another institution.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards on upon the recommendation of the Department of French.

Lawrence and Marie Luisa Macrae Scholarship in Italian*

Lawrence and Marie Luisa Macrae Scholarship in Spanish*

One or more scholarships are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students pursuing a degree in Hispanic or Italian Studies and who are registered in a study abroad program, field school, experiential learning opportunity, or co-op work-term in Spain.  Approval of the recipients is made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Hispanic and Italian Studies.

Richard and Margaret Beck Student Research Travel Award*

One award of up to $6,000 is given to an undergraduate or graduate student in Humanities, Social Sciences or Fine Arts to travel to Iceland for the purpose of research or course work related to Icelandic language and literature. Preference will be given to applicants who have already completed a course or are undertaking a significant research project that is related to Icelandic language and literature. If no eligible applicants apply from Humanities, Social Sciences or Fine Arts, the award may be given to an undergraduate or graduate student in any faculty.

Applications must be submitted to the Dean of Humanities by December 15th.

In the case of an undergraduate award, approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Associate Dean Academic of Humanities. In the case of a graduate award, approval of the recipient will be made by the Faculty of Graduate Studies Graduate Awards Committee upon the recommendation of the Associate Dean Research of Humanities.

Robert J. Murphy Travel Award in Greek and Roman Studies*

One or more travel awards of at least $1,000 each are awarded to undergraduate student who have a declared major in Greek and Roman Studies and who are enrolled in a field school, study tour or a study abroad course offered through the Department of Greek and Roman Studies, or approved by the department. The award will assist students with the costs of travel and/or fees associated with programs offered by the Department of Greek and Roman Studies.

Students will be selected based on a written proposal submitted to the department.

Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Greek and Roman Studies.

Silberberg Family Memorial Award*

One or more awards are given to undergraduate students to assist with the travel costs of the I-witness Field School (travel to, from and within Europe).  Students must submit a statement of no more than 500 words to the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies by March 1 describing their reasons for wanting to participate in the Field School and what they hope to learn from the experience.  The students will be selected by the Director of the I-witness Field School. 

Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies.

William and Amelia Kushniryk Memorial Award*

One or more awards are given to undergraduate students studying Ukrainian language and/or culture who are continuing their studies of Ukrainian language and/or culture in the upcoming summer session through an accredited program in Ukraine. Part-time and graduating students are eligible for this award. Students must apply to the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies by March 15th

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies.

Barkley Sound Field School Student Award

One or more awards of $1,000 each are given to undergraduate students in the Department of Anthropology who have completed at least one course in archaeology in the last academic year, are attending the Barkley Sound Field School and have demonstrated financial need.

Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Anthropology.

Budvitch Award in Holocaust Studies

Value: $1,800 | Number: 1

One award of $1,800 is given to an undergraduate student to assist with the travel costs of the I-witness Field School (travel to, from and within Europe) who has demonstrated financial need and who would otherwise not be able to attend the School. The student will be selected by the Director of the I-witness Field School. 

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Germanic and Slavic Studies.

Lynette F. Hain Memorial Scholarship in French*

One or more scholarships of at least $1,000 each are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students with a declared major in French who are enrolled in the bi-annual French Field School Seminar. Preference will be given to students with demonstrated financial need.

Online travel award budget sheet is required, students must apply through UVic Online tools between January 01 and January 31.

Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of French.

Clark Wilson Recruitment Inclusion Award

Value: $625 each | Number: 4

Four awards of $625 each will be given to undergraduate students in the Faculty of Law to assist with costs related to their participation in recruiting interviews or events as part of the Vancouver Bar Association Summer and Articling Recruitment Processes for firms participating within the designated time period. Three of these awards will be given to students participating in the Vancouver Summer Recruitment Process and one award will be given to a student participating in the Vancouver Articling Recruitment Process. Costs include but are not limited to: travel, accommodation, meals, child care, lost wages, corporate attire and personal care. Students must have demonstrated financial need and must have at least one confirmed scheduled interview or event prior to applying. Applications must be submitted to the Dean’s Office, Faculty of Law, no later than one week after Interview Call Day for the Recruitment Process in which the applicant is participating.
