Economics Department Awards

Please read the instructions carefully to confirm whether an application is required.

Scholarships marked with an asterisk (*) are administered by the University of Victoria Foundation.

Students must apply to be considered for the entrance scholarships below, which are based on marks and other criteria such as academic achievement and volunteer and community work. All UVic entrance scholarships require a minimum 85% admission average, unless otherwise specified in the terms of reference of the scholarship. Recipients will be approved upon the recommendation of the Department of Economics.

The scholarships below:

  • require an online application via Online tools submitted between February 15 - April 30, unless otherwise stated in the Terms of Awards.
  • are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes.

Alec Maclean Annual Award in Economics

One or more awards are given to transferring or continuing undergraduate students in the Department of Economics with demonstrated financial need.

Approval of the recipients is made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Economics.

R.W. "Bob" McQueen Economics Award*

Value: Varies | Number: Varies

Two or more awards of equal value are to be given to third or fourth year undergraduate students of different genders with a declared Major or Honours program in the Department of Economics.  Each recipient is to be BC born, be a graduate of a BC public high school and have demonstrated financial need.

If there are no eligible recipients, then the awards are to be given to entering first or second year students from outside the lower mainland and the greater Victoria area who were BC born, graduated from a BC public high school and have demonstrated financial need.

Applications from students are not required for scholarships listed in this section.

Unless otherwise indicated, recipients are approved by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Economics.

These scholarships are governed by the general regulations for scholarships, medals, and prizes.

Colin Jones Prize in Canadian Public Policy

Value: $200 | Number: 1

A prize of $200 is awarded to the student in the Department of Economics for academic excellence in the study of Canadian public policy.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Economics.

Dr. Gordon Bertram Memorial Scholarship*

Value: Varies | Number: 1

A scholarship is awarded to a third or fourth year student in the Department of Economics who is proficient in the study of Canadian Economic History, or in one of the courses that may be substituted for it to fulfill the Canadian Economic History requirement, if Canadian Economic History is not taught.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Economics.

Dr. Leo Bakony Memorial Scholarship

One or more scholarships of at least $1,000 each are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students entering year four of a Major or Honours B.Sc. in Economics. Selection is based on academic performance in courses that fulfill the statistics requirements for the degree, with preference being given to the completion of third year requirements.

Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Economics.

Economics Alumni Undergraduate Scholarship*

A scholarship is awarded to an academically outstanding undergraduate student who has completed the degree requirements for a Major or Honours BA or BSc in Economics. Selection is based upon academic performance in fourth year Economics courses.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Economics.

George Hamilton Harman Memorial Scholarship*

Two scholarships are made available by Miss Emily A. Harman of Toronto in memory of her late brother, are awarded for proficiency in money and banking or in Economics.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Economics.

Kenneth L. Avio Honours Prize

Value: $200 | Number: 1

A prize of $200 is awarded to the undergraduate student in the Department of Economics for the most outstanding Honours Thesis.

Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Economics.

Leonard Laudadio Prize in Environmental Economics

Value: $200 | Number: 1

A medal prize of $200 is awarded to the student in the Department of Economics for academic excellence in the study of environmental economics.

 

Nancy Margaret South Memorial Award

One or more awards are given to women students entering third or fourth year in the Department of Economics who have completed at least one Co-op term.

Approval of the recipient(s) will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Economics.

  • Some of the following awards may require application through the Department of Economics; please review the eligibility criteria and application instructions below for further information.

Alec Maclean Annual Award in Economics

One or more awards are given to transferring or continuing undergraduate students in the Department of Economics with demonstrated financial need.

Approval of the recipients is made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Economics.

Bob Worth Award in Economics*

Value: Varies | Number: 1

An award of at least $2,500 is given to an undergraduate student entering third year in the Department of Economics who has:

a) demonstrated financial need;
b) successfully completed COM 240;
c) a strong interest in pursuing a career in business; and
d) a minimum GPA of 5.5

The award may be renewed for the recipient's fourth year of studies. To be automatically renewed a student must have completed a total of 12 or more academic units in two terms of study between May and April in the previous academic year and maintained a grade point average of 5.5/9.00 or higher on their best 12 units. A student whose grade point average falls below 5.5/9.00 may file a written appeal with the Senate Committee on Awards to seek special consideration for the renewal of the award.

Students registered in co-op or a work experience work-term will automatically be renewed when they next complete 12 or more academic units in two terms, provided they have a grade point average of 5.5/9.00 or higher in the two terms. Any student who takes neither a co-op, work experience/work-term, nor academic units for more than one term may forfeit the award. 

Harold G. Craven Scholarship*

One or more scholarships of not less than $1,000 are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate 4th year students in the Department of Economics or the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business who intend to pursue a career as a Chartered Accountant. Scholarships may be awarded to graduating students. Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Economics or the Peter B. Gustavson School of Business.

J. Prospero Scholarship for Sustainable Mining

Value: $1,000 | Number: 1

A scholarship of $1,000 is awarded to an academically outstanding woman undergraduate student entering third or fourth year in either the Department of Economics, School of Environmental Studies, the Department of Geography, the Department of Anthropology or the Department of Political Science. Preference is for students whose academic research (Honours Thesis/JCURA under the guidance of a faculty member) could have application to the improvement of the environmental and social performance of the mining industry. Further preference is given to Indigenous women students and people of colour.

Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards based on the recommendation of the Faculty of Social Sciences.

PH and N Institutional Undergraduate Scholarship

One or more scholarships of at least $1,000 each are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate student(s) in the Department of Economics, with preference for students with demonstrated financial need. Approval of the recipient will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Economics.
