Athletic Awards

The amount of an athletic award or scholarship are subject to the discretion of the Director of Athletics and Recreation in consultation with the Varsity Head Coach and the Associate Director, Sport, and are re-evaluated on an annual basis. Recipients must meet the requirements subject to their athletic governing body (NAIA, U SPORTS, NCAA) regarding the total amount of financial aid they can accept per year.

Except where the terms and conditions of an athletic award, award, scholarship or prize specifically state otherwise, Varsity award winners must normally have passed a minimum of 9.0 units in the preceding academic year with a minimum sessional GPA of 3.0; if the terms of the award or scholarship are for non-varsity student-athletes, regular scholarship regulations apply, and students must have completed a minimum of 12 units in two terms in the previous academic year. Please note, student-athletes receiving an athletic award in their entering year must have a minimum 80% GPA (U SPORTS regulation).  

Scholarships marked with an asterisk (*) are funded by the University of Victoria Foundation.

Students may be considered for the following bursaries by completing the general bursary application. Only one application is necessary to be considered for all bursaries.

Jane Seaborne Bursary

One or more bursaries are awarded to woman students in a major or honours program in Biology, Biochemistry and Microbiology, Chemistry, Earth and Ocean Sciences, or Physics and Astronomy. Preference will be given to students who are involved in intramural sports.

Wilf Sadler Memorial Bursary Fund

A bursary will be allocated annually to a needy student from the Greater Victoria area who is entering the University from the secondary school system. Preference will be given to students who can demonstrate significant involvement in amateur sports.

1975 Vikes Men's Soccer Championship Award*

50th Anniversary Vikes Entrance Scholarship*

One or more scholarships of not less than $1,000 are awarded to academically outstanding undergraduate students who are entering the University of Victoria directly from Canadian secondary schools and who have demonstrated excellence in athletics. BC Athlete Assistance Program

The Post Secondary Institution (PSI) component of the BC AAP provides financial support to partially offset training, competition and education costs for identified British Columbia high performance student athletes striving to achieve championship performances while representing their Post Secondary Institution, province and country in athletic competition.

Program objectives

The objectives of the PSI component of the BC AAP are to:

  • support student athletes as they strive to achieve athletic and academic excellence;
  • recruit and retain British Columbia student athletes in British Columbia; and
  • contribute to improved performances of identified British Columbia student athletes at Intercollegiate Regional and National Championship.

One or more awards are given to Canadian secondary school students entering first year who will be involved in the Men's Varsity Rugby program. Eligible students must meet all U SPORTS eligibility requirements and be Canadian citizens. Award recipients will be selected on the basis of drive, power, positive attitude, commitment and performance criteria set by the Director of Athletics and Recreation in consultation with the Varsity Head Coach and the Associate Director, Sport. These awards have been funded by the Velox-Valhallians Sport Club and University of Victoria rugby players.

Brittany Waters and Barbara Mervin LeadHERship Award*

One or more awards are given to undergraduate students who compete on the Vikes Women's Varsity Rugby Team, with preference to athletes who participate in leadership activities such as, but not limited to:
• Coaching in the community
• Refereeing in the community

Carmen Kirkness Award*

Part-time students are eligible (minimum 9.0 units for undergraduate students and less than 3.0 units for graduate). If no assistant coaching student is eligible, one or more awards are given to undergraduate or graduate students who compete on the Vikes Men's Rugby team at the University of Victoria. Dr. Jack and Verna Miller Indigenous Athletics Award

One award of $1,200 is given to a Canadian-born Indigenous undergraduate or graduate student who competes on any Vikes Varsity team at the University of Victoria. An award is given to two academically outstanding graduate, or 3rd or 4th year undergraduate students who are active members of a Vikes Recreation Club or Vikes Varsity team at the University of Victoria. Students must demonstrate community involvement, volunteerism or participation in a community based social improvement program. The award will be presented to one or more members of the Vikes Men’s Basketball team who meet all U SPORTS eligibility requirements, and have played basketball at a Vancouver Island school during grades 11 and 12. Vikes International Athlete Award

One or more awards of $40,000, payable at $10,000 per year over 4 years, are given to international undergraduate students entering or transferring to UVic and who compete on any Vikes Varsity team at the University of Victoria.

The award is automatically renewed for each year of a student's full-time study until the completion of the first degree or for a maximum of three years, whichever is the shorter period, provided they meet and maintain U SPORTS eligibility requirements.

Award recipients will be selected on the basis of work ethic, commitment and performance criteria by the Senior Director of Athletics and Recreation and the Director of Varsity Performance Sport.

All UVic entrance scholarships require a minimum 85% admission average, unless otherwise specified in the terms of reference of the scholarship. Recipients will be selected upon the recommendation of the Director, Vikes Athletics & Recreation and the Associate Director, Sport.

Students must provide a coach's reference letter. One or more awards are given to undergraduate students entering the University of Victoria directly from a secondary school in one of the 13 municipalities in the Greater Victoria region who compete on a Vikes Varsity team. Eligible students must meet all U SPORTS eligibility requirements. Preference will be given to students who themselves have received, or have members of their immediate family, who have received or made an organ donation. Further preference is for students who, either themselves or members of their immediate family, have been involved or affected by an organ transplant or an organ donation.  For the purpose of this award, immediate family is defined as parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts or uncles, nieces or nephews.

Award recipients will also be selected on the basis of work ethic, commitment and performance criteria by the Senior Director of Athletics and Recreation in consultation with the Director, Varsity Performance Sport.

A cover letter (not to exceed 500 words) and a CV (not to exceed two pages) must be submitted to the Senior Director of Athletics and Recreation by October 31.

The cover letter must include:

  • Full legal name, date of birth, name of secondary school attended and year of graduation;

Preference will be given to a student who meets at least one of the following criteria:

  • Is involved in entrepreneurial endeavours
  • Demonstrates leadership skills
  • Has completed or is currently doing a co-op, internship or volunteering related to their academic studies
  • Has an interest in working the real estate industry

One or more awards are given to undergraduate or graduate full or part-time students who are Canadian citizens and have been identified as international calibre athletes by their national sport governing body. The award is open to student-athletes in any sport but preference will be given to those representing the University and who meet the University's eligibility requirements. Award recipients will be selected on the basis of sporting achievement by the Director of Athletics and Recreation in consultation with the Associate Director, Sport.

Lucas Main Elevator Award

One or more awards are given to undergraduate students who are active members of either the Open or Women’s Ultimate Club and who have demonstrate financial need. Students must also demonstrate a strong work ethic, commitment to the team, and spirit of the game. Undergraduate students must apply via the online application between April 1st and May 31st. Graduating students are eligible to apply. Award recipients will be selected by the Director, Varsity Performance Sport in consultation with the Head Coaches. Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Department of Wellness, Recreation and Athletics.

Marion Cassels Memorial Indigenous Athletics Award*

One or more awards of at least $1,000 each are given to undergraduate Canadian-born Indigenous students who are student athletes. Preference will be given in the following order:
1. Students who have been identified as international caliber athletes by their national sport governing body.
2. Varsity athletes, competing on a UVic team. Eligible students must meet all U SPORTS eligibility requirements.
3. Students who participate in UVic Sport Clubs or UVic Intramurals Teams.
4. Students who participate, or have recently participated, in a recreational community team/group. This can include participation on a high school team or club, a team in a home community or a team in the Capital Regional District. Applicants must submit a letter (max 300 words) identifying the category of athlete and detailing their current or recent sport participation and caliber/level of competition. Consideration will also be given to students currently participating in active, healthy living programs and activities. Part time students (minimum 4.5 units per term) are eligible. Approval of the recipients will be made by the Senate Committee on Awards upon the recommendation of the Senior Director, Wellness, Recreation and Athletics in consultation with the Director, Varsity Performance Sport and will be selected on the basis of sporting achievement and participation.

Trudy and Doug Peden Vikes Women in Sport Award*
