Fair dealing

All course reading lists must comply with UVic's Fair Dealing Guidelines:

  • Link to ebooks and journals accessible via library licensed resources
  • Link to material freely accessible on the web
  • Place personal copies of books, journals, textbooks, lecture notes, etc. on print reserves
  • Upload PDFs of articles from journals or book excerpts in compliance with UVic's Fair Dealing Guidelines
  • Coursepacks and complimentary/desk copies of textbooks provided by publishers cannot be placed on course reserves.

Note: The may be able to produce coursepacks that consolidate all your course readings and are sold to students.

Print reserves

Due to space limitations, we will only place an item on print reserve if it is a required reading for the course.

  • If an ebook for the title is available, we will include a link in the reading list instead.
  • If only 10% or 1 chapter of the title is required, we may be able to create an accessible PDF and upload it to the course reading list.

Submit your print reserves request to reserves@uvic.ca with the following information:

  • Instructor name
  • Instructor email
  • Course number and section
  • Term(s)
  • Loan period
  • Item details (author, title, publication date, publisher, call number)

Processing times

Please submit your reading lists by the following deadlines:

  • Summer (May–August) semester: April 1
  • Fall (September–December) semester: August 1
  • Spring (January–April) semester: December 1

Requests are processed in the order in which they are received. Reading lists received at the beginning of the semester may take two weeks to process from the time received. In these cases, we will prioritize the readings for the first three to four weeks.
