Potential vaccine against syphilis
UVic microbiologist Caroline Cameron has been awarded a patent for a potential vaccine candidate against syphilis. While the bacterial disease dates back to at least 1495 and is treatable with antibiotics, its highly infectious nature makes it an enduring health issue.
Is HIV therapy driving new syphilis cases?
Drugs used to prevent and treat HIV could be contributing to a dramatic rise in syphilis cases, according to a new study co-authored by UVic microbiologist Caroline Cameron. The study suggests that antiretroviral therapy medications for treating HIV may affect the body’s immune response to certain diseases, including syphilis.
