Bike to Work Week
The Ring
UVic was again a major sponsor of the 16th annual Bike to Work Week, May 30-June 5, 2011. UVic faculty, students and staff accounted for 44 of the total 615 teams registered in the Victoria area. The university hosted two free bike skills courses and two celebration stations, with free refreshments, bike tune-ups, bike engraving and prize draws. Participation at all celebration stations in Victoria was much higher than in past years. The Commuter Challenge saw 20 cyclist and driver teams compete to see who could get downtown first. Fifteen of the 20 cyclists outclassed their motorized counterparts by an average of two to three minutes, proving that cycling is an efficient way to commute to work. Check the website of the Office of Campus Planning and Sustainability for cycling-related news and resources throughout the year.

For more than a decade, the University of Victoria has rolled out its support for the annual Bike to Work Week. This year from May 11 to 17, UVic will join communities across the province in a week-long commuter cycling celebration filled with daily activities. The on-campus events include bike engraving and repairs, prize draws, a “slowest bike race,” and a free screening of The Triplets of Belleville. See the Calendar Highlights at left. Fifty-three campus teams and more than 1,000 UVic cycle commuters participated in Bike to Work Week 2009 (May 11–17). The annual province-wide event was an excellent excuse to enjoy good exercise and fresh air, and sample the benefits of commuting by bicycle every day. Employees throughout Victoria pedaled a total of 171,332 km. Bicycles make up over 7 per cent of UVic’s total transportation mix.
