Flag lowered in memory of Elder-in-Residence Dr. Marie Cooper

The university flag will be lowered in memory of Elder-in-Residence Dr. Marie Cooper on Friday, Apr. 7. Marie passed away peacefully on Mar. 31 at home. She was a tireless advocate and leader in education and for her people. Marie's passing is a poignant reminder of her immense legacy, which is a lasting gift to her community, the WSANEC School Board, School District 63, Camosun College and the University of Victoria.

Dr. Cooper received an honorary Doctorate of Education degree from the University of Victoria in 2010, in recognition of a lifetime of absolute commitment to education, particularly for Indigenous learners. She was a member of UVic Elders’ Voices since 2008.

A prayer service will be offered on Thursday, Apr. 6 at 7 p.m. and a service will be held Friday, Apr. 7 at 9 a.m. at Pauquachin Hall, 9010 West Saanich Road, North Saanich. A luncheon will follow at Pauquachin Hall.
