2014 3M National Student fellow

Tye Landels, a third-year honours student in the University of Victoria’s Department of English, has been awarded one of 10 highly competitive 3M National Student Fellowships in recognition of his outstanding leadership and motivational approach to the academic experience.

As president of the UVic English Students’ Association, an encoder and research assistant for the UVic digital-humanities project Map of Early Modern London (MoEML) and a student with physical disabilities, Landels exemplifies what it means to be a champion of equality and social justice and an inspiration for other students within the post-secondary setting.

“It is typical of Tye,” said Dr. Janelle Jenstad, UVic associate professor and MoEML director, “to transform his own experiences into compassionate leadership and community engagement. These efforts include fundraising on behalf of his former high school, contributing to organizations that have assisted him, such as the Canadian Institute for the Blind, writing up what he’s learning with MoEML as training documents for his successors, and turning his passion for grassroots initiatives into a wholesale restructuring of the English Students’ Association.”

The fellowship is presented by 3M Canada in partnership with the Society for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education (STLHE) and includes a $5,000 prize, as well as a trip to Kingston for the STLHE conference in June 2014. The award ceremony takes place June 18 and the STLHE gathering also includes a full-day retreat for all 10 student fellows to work on a collaborative project related to post-secondary education.

The long-standing 3M National Teaching Fellowship for university professors was used as a model for the 3M student fellowship.
