UVic among top-ranked universities worldwide under age 50

The University of Victoria is among the top 20 universities in the world under the age of 50 and first in Canada in the Times Higher Education’s 100-under-50 rankings released today.

Each university’s standing was determined by 13 objective performance indicators including research, citations (research influence), teaching, international outlook and industry income.

UVic placed first in Canada for the second consecutive year, fifth in North America and 20th worldwide.

Britain-based THE, known for its autumn release of the World University Rankings, established the 100-under-50 group last year with the aim to show which post-secondary institutions and countries are emerging as powerhouses in higher education. There are four Canadian universities in the top 100.

"To be recognized as one of the best young universities in the world, and the top university in Canada under the age of 50 for two consecutive years is an honour that all of us here at UVic – as well as our friends, families, alumni and supporters – can be proud of as we celebrate our 50th anniversary,” says UVic president David Turpin.

The University of Victoria was established in 1963 by provincial legislation following a public campaign to establish a university in the region. It now hosts 20,000 students, including 3,200 graduate students.

“The focus at UVic has been on quality and excellence together with a determination to hire the best faculty from around the world, resulting in international research impact and outstanding opportunities for students,” says Turpin.

THE rankings are regularly used by undergraduate and postgraduate students to help select degree courses, by academics to inform career decisions, by research teams to identify new collaborative partners and by university managers to benchmark their performance and set strategic priorities.

The University of Victoria is consistently ranked as one of Canada’s leading research universities by external surveys and UVic students alike. Across its wide array of academic programs at the undergraduate and graduate level, UVic’s focus is on excellence in the core areas of university performance—in teaching, scholarship and research that benefits our society.

Earlier this year, UVic was recognized as being in the top one per cent of universities in the world and among the top-ranked in Canada for its scientific impact and its involvement in scientific collaboration, as measured by the Leiden University’s Centre for Science and Technology Studies.
