Masterminds Kicks Off With Victoria's Changing Climate

The University of Victoria’s annual public Masterminds lecture series by UVic retirees launches tomorrow with the first of Wednesday night lectures through to April 25. Sponsored by UVic’s Retirees Association, Centre on Aging and with support from the university, each lecture takes place in the Harry Hickman building starting at 7 p.m. in room 105. As seating is limited, attendees are asked to register by calling 250-721-6369.

April 4: The Climate of Victoria: Characteristics, Variations, and Controls
Dr. Stanton Tuller is a professor emeritus in the Department of Geography, where he taught climatology from 1969 until his recent retirement. He will discuss the key controls of our local climate and will explain why microclimates vary so markedly around the Capital Region.

April 11: The Emergence of Architectural Modernism in Greater Victoria
Prof. Martin Segger is the former director and curator of the Maltwood Art Museum and Gallery, and was a senior research associate in the Centre for Global Studies and adjunct professor in the Department of History in Art. He will discuss the development of a regional modernist aesthetic in the post-war Victoria urban landscape.

April 18: How Age-Friendly is BC?
Dr. Elaine Gallagher is professor emeritus in the School of Nursing and is the lead Canadian researcher for an international project on age-friendly communities. She is best known for her work on the epidemiology of senior slips, trips and falls in public places. She will discuss ways to enhance the activity level and independence of seniors through age-friendly initiatives.

April 25: Challenging Science Illiteracy: Canadian Successes and Building for the Future
Dr. Larry Yore is distinguished professor emeritus in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction and has been involved in research on teaching and learning science with a focus on literacy and language for over 40 years. He will discuss the success of Canadian and BC schools in promoting reading, mathematics and science literacy.
