New university librarian appointed

Jonathan Bengston has been appointed University Librarian for a five-year term effective January 1, 2012 to June 30, 2017. Bengtson is the director of Library and Archives at the University of St. Michael's College in the University of Toronto, and the director of Library and Archives at the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies. His prior experiences include chief librarian at the University of St. Michael's College in the University of Toronto, executive director at Providence Athenaeum, Providence, Rhode Island, and head librarian at The Queens College, Oxford. He received a BA (1990) from the University of California, Santa Cruz, an MPhil (1994) from the University of Oxford, and an MA in library and information studies (1996) from University College, London.

“Mr. Bengston is widely recognized as an innovative and visionary leader with a passion for libraries,” says Reeta Tremblay, vice-president academic and provost. “We are delighted to welcome him to UVic. His demonstrated strengths in implementing digitization in library settings combined with his extensive international library experience will be assets to us as we move forward in this rapidly changing age of information.”

University Librarian Marnie Swanson will retire effective December 30, 2011. Swanson has been university librarian since 1988.
