Understanding Language And Early Literacy Links

Children with communication disorders (i.e. speech or language delays) are often at risk for reading and writing problems. Dr. Gina Harrison, a researcher with UVic’s Language, Literacy and Learning lab, is currently conducting a study on the relationship between the speech or language difficulties that some children experience and their literacy development.
Harrison and her research team are asking parents and their four- to six-year-old children with communications disorders to participate in a study to help increase understanding within this area of research. Participating boys and girls will be asked to complete some early language, reading and writing tasks, such as detecting and producing rhyming words, and doing some letter and sound identification and writing.
Sessions will last approximately one hour and will be scheduled at the participants’ convenience. The findings from this study will help Harrison and her research team better understand the early literacy needs of children with communication disorders to inform effective instruction.
