New UVic Forum Poses Tough Questions For Religions

Do religions condone violence, exclude different beliefs and discriminate based on gender? These are the thorny questions for a new three-part panel discussion sponsored by the University of Victoria’s Interfaith Services for the new year.

UVic’s Interfaith Services in collaboration with other sectors of the university will present three panel discussions: “Are religions inherently violent?” on Tuesday, Jan. 27 from 4:30-6 p.m.; “Do religions discriminate against women?” Tuesday, Feb. 24 from 4:30-6 p.m.; and “Are religions mutually exclusive?” Tuesday, March 17 from 4:30-6 p.m. UVic’s Dean of Humanities Dr. Andrew Rippin will moderate the three panel discussions.

To launch the forum, an early discussion will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 20 led by keynote speaker the Right Reverend Michael Ingham, Anglican Bishop of New Westminster, from 4:30-6 p.m. in the David Lam Theatre. The discussion’s theme is “When religion goes bad: religious dynamics in an age of violence and intolerance.” Dr. Paul Bramadat of UVic’s Centre for Studies in Religion and Society will be the respondent to Bishop Ingham’s address.

Each event is free and open to the public. The three main panels will each be followed one week later with an extra discussion to foster continued dialogue including with additional faith groups. For further details, visit www.uvic.ca/interfaith or call 250-721-8338.
