Curtain Call for Dr. Zonk: Final show of UVic professor’s special brand of magic

Legendary mad scientist Dr. Zonk (aka University of Victoria chemistry professor Dr. Reg Mitchell) will put on his green wig for the very last time next month. Mitchell retires this year, and the 2008 wacky magic shows on November 5 and 6 will be the last chance ever to catch Dr. Zonk in action.

Every year since 1974, Dr. Zonk has demystified science and wowed more than 60,000 children of all ages with stunning displays of neon pyrotechnics, putrid stink bombs, quickly extinguished explosions and spooky scientific secrets.

Tickets for the Dr. Zonk magic show—a major contributor to the university’s annual United Way fundraising campaign—are available for $8 through the UVic Ticket Centre at the University Centre, by calling 250-721-8480 or online at www.auditorium.uvic.ca. Details about UVic’s 2008 United Way activities are available at www.unitedway.uvic.ca.

Mitchell is an internationally recognized chemist, a longtime organizer of the Vancouver Island Regional Science Fair, and the recipient of numerous honours including the Royal Society of Canada’s McNeil Medal, the Eve Savory Award for Science Communication from the Science Council of BC, the Academic of the Year Award from the Confederation of University Faculty Associations of BC, the UVic Alumni Excellence in Teaching Award and UVic’s Craigdarroch Award for Research Communication. Mitchell will perform an altogether different kind of ‘magic’ when he retires in December by transforming his back deck with an overdue renovation.
