Day of Creative Activities Gives Peace a Chance
Summer solstice heralds a day of creative peacemaking at UVic. On June 21, the first day of summer, the university’s faculty of education is hosting a full day of public discussions, workshops and presentations focusing on peace.
“Creativity in Action: Peace Education and the World We Want” is UVic’s contribution to the Victoria Days of Peace (June 18-24) which lead up to the 2006 World Peace Forum in Vancouver (June 23-28).
Among the events at UVic:
• An all day exhibition displaying artwork created by the children of Afghanistan and Iraq;
• A panel discussion featuring Murray Thomson, former peace education secretary of the Canadian Friends Service Committee;
• Hands-on creative workshops including claymation, lantern making, poetry, art cards for Africa and podcasting;
• Two half-hour segments of a documentary film series “A Force More Powerful,” which explores places where non-violent action has overcome oppression; and
• Post film discussions between the audience and guest speakers from Peace Brigades International.
The events are being held in the MacLaurin building. Events are free and all ages are welcome but participants must pre register online at http://www.educ.uvic.ca/PeaceInEducation.php or by phoning 250-721-7766.
