Taiwan Election Too Close to Call

With the three leading presidential candidates in a neck and neck battle and 30 per cent of the electorate undecided, it's hard to predict who will prevail in Saturday's general election in Taiwan, says Dr. Harry Hsiao. A faculty member in UVic's Pacific and Asian studies department, he specializes in China-Taiwan relations. Hsiao thinks a recent endorsement of Democratic Progressive Party candidate Chen Shui-bian by Academia Sinica, Taiwan's prestigious research institute, may give Chen a bit of a boost. China's premier, Zhu Rongji has warned the Taiwanese that a vote for Chen is a vote for independence, something Zhu says China will never allow. Hsiao is willing to discuss the election and its outcome, which should be known on Canada's west coast by Saturday morning.
