New Courses Address Post-September 11 Questions
Looking for answers to questions raised by the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and the subsequent war against terrorism? Look no further than the spring calendar of courses being offered by UVic's division of continuing studies. A series of courses, lectures, and a public forum addressing the new awareness of terrorism and its associated issues are among the offerings in the latest calendar which is now available.
Many courses start in January and are held at the UVic campus, at UVic Downtown (910 Government Street), and at Dunsmuir Lodge. They are offered at convenient times to cater to learners from all walks of life wanting to pursue a personal interest or professional career development.
Among the courses being offered in the new calendar are:
101 Questions about Islam
It's a major world religion, yet most people in the West
do not have a clear understanding of Islam's belief system.
This session provides an overview of what the religion of
Islam is about, explores its relationship to other world
religions, and addresses some of the perceptions and issues
that arise in trying to understand Islam.
Philosophy, Terrorism, and Global Justice
This course examines the sociological, psychological,
and philosophical bases of terrorism, exploring factors such
as oppression and poverty, nationalism, religious
fundamentalism, and ideological conviction. The course will
present critical thinking techniques and emotional awareness
exercises to help in dealing with these controversial issues
in a calm, non-reactive manner.
Lecture Series and Public Forum
A trio of lectures leading up to a March 19 public forum
on responses to terrorism aims to broaden the understanding
of complex issues such as the impact of terrorism on Canada,
sources of deep-rooted conflict, and responses in the Middle
East.
