International Women's Day - 100 Anniversary

March 8 is the centennial celebration for International Women’s Day, marking the economic, political and social achievements of women around the world. The following experts from the University of Victoria are available to comment:

Dr. Charlotte Reading (Public Health and Social Policy) is an expert in Aboriginal women’s health and recently completed a study on the role of sexual violence in the lives of Aboriginal women with HIV. She can discuss how HIV/AIDS continues to rise in this population and how sexual violence and exploitation of Aboriginal women and girls is still a challenge. Dr. Janni Aragon (Department of Political Science) is an expert on gender and politics as well as American politics, feminist theories and methodologies, youth and politics, and women and technology. She can discuss the role of women in politics in the US and Canada. Aragon is available for interviews today through Tues., March 8 during regular office hours. Dr. Laura Parisi (Department of Women’s Studies) is an expert in gender, international human rights and development, global political economy, and transnational feminisms. She has also attended and participated in a number of United Nations activities related to women’s rights. Parisi is available for interviews today through Tues., March 8 during regular office hours. Linley Faulkner (School of Public Administration) is enrolled as an MPA candidate and received her BA at UVic with a double major in political science and women’s studies. Her graduate work is focused on international feminist organizations and the use of new information and communication tools for civil society organizations. She is currently at the UN Commission on the Status of Women in New York City, and is working for a Manila-based international women's organization called Development Alternatives with Women for a New Era (DAWN).
