Can Moving Your Arms Help Move Your Legs?

Does exercising a healthy part of the body help heal damaged limbs? University of Victoria kinesiology graduate student Yasaman Barzi is looking for volunteers to help her determine if activity in the arms will affect leg muscles. “It has been suggested that centres for controlling movement of the arms and legs are connected via spinal pathways. As part of my master’s degree research I’m investigating if rhythmic movement of the arms changes the activity of the legs after a stroke.”
Barzi is looking for a control group of older adult volunteers to assist in her study to ensure that age is not a potential influence on her research results. She is seeking healthy individuals older than 70 years old who are willing to commit to one, three-hour visit to her lab to perform an arm cycling task while seated.
