Backgrounder: UVic names Giants' owner as distinguished entrepreneur

Jeffrey A. Mallett

Seasoned businessman and entrepreneur Jeffrey Mallett is currently an owner and member of the executive committee of the San Francisco Giants baseball team. The 2003 National League West champions is the National League attendance leader with over 3.2 million fans attending games last year. The Giants franchise is valued at over $450 million. Its waterfront home field is the first privately funded major league ballpark since 1962, and, since opening in 2000, has led the league in attendance figures.

Prior to his association with the San Francisco Giants, Mallett was president and chief operating officer and elected member of the Board of Directors of Internet media giant Yahoo! Inc. Joining the company in 1995 when it consisted of 12 employees and no revenue, Mallett was instrumental in building Yahoo! into one of the 30 most recognizable global entertainment and media brands and assisted in taking the company public in 1996. By 2002, Mallett managed a global workforce of 4,000 employees in 27 countries and $1 billion in revenue. Today, Yahoo! holds a market value in excess of $30 billion and had a worldwide user base of over 263 million. A few of the hundreds of the company’s business partners include MTV, VISA, FIFA World Cup Soccer, NBA, NFL and the U.S. Olympic Committee for the 2002 Winter Olympics.

Before his tenure at Yahoo!, Mallett was vice president and general manager of the consumer products division of Novell, Inc. and a member of Novell’s global marketing board. He participated in the merger of the company with software leader Wordperfect Corp. He was a founding executive team member and vice president of Reference Software, an independent worldwide leader in consumer software language services. As a director of the Canadian-based telecommunications company Island Pacific Telephone, Mallett contributed to taking the company from a start-up to its being acquired by telecommunications giant Cable and Wireless in 1987.

Mallett lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his wife of 16 years and their two children. In addition to his business and entrepreneurial ventures, he is a participant and supporter of several local and national charities including the David Foster Foundation, the Muhammad Ali Celebrity Fight Night for Parkinson Research, the Willie Mays Say Hey Foundation, the Boys and Girls Clubs of America and B.C.’s Children’s Hospital.
