Nepali student inspires us all to widen our world view

A Canadian volunteer leading an aid project and boarding school in Kathmandu for Himalayan children helped transport Dechen Dolma Lama from one of the most impoverished villages in Nepal to UVic where she graduates this month with a bachelor's degree in child and youth care.

Business grad beats the odds

Siyad Jama's journey to a BCom degree at UVic's Gustavson School of Business began when he stepped off the plane in Victoria for the first time in 2011. "I had no idea what to expect," he recalls. "It was all new to me—Canada, Victoria, UVic. I knew it was the warmest place in Canada, but coming from Kenya, even that meant something different."

Ryan Tonkin, 1st student in PhD program

Tonkin is the recipient of a 2017 Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship, administered through the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, and on July 5, was named a Trudeau Scholar 2017 by the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation. He is the eighth UVic student (and the first in philosophy) to win the prestigious Trudeau scholarship since the program's inception in 2004.

Students connect with Australian Aboriginal community on Indigenous exchange

Jackson McDermott and Tami Schiefelbein had no lack of support before leaving on their work exchange to Newcastle, Australia, last fall. The two Indigenous students received $6,000 from the Queen Elizabeth Scholarship program for young global leaders, had a team of co-op staff to assist with travel logistics, and attended cultural competency classes to prepare themselves for three-and-a-half months of working at the Wollotuka Institute at the University of Newcastle.

University of Victoria recognizes STEPS Forward students at convocation

The UVic Senate has approved a recommendation that students with developmental disabilities enrolled in UVic courses through a partnership with the BC Initiative for Inclusive Post-secondary Education (STEPS Forward) be recognized at the university's convocation ceremonies, starting this June.
