Stone Age classroom

The Ring

A group of 17 UVic anthropology students went back to the Stone Age working with bone, shell, obsidian, stone and wood to make hand tools and spear-like weapons that are thrown with a spear thrower, known as the atlatl.

EU study tour

The Ring

Nine students traveled to Europe this May on the annual EU Study Tour. Offered through UVic's European studies program, the tour includes visits to Brussels, Luxembourg, Strasbourg and Frankfurt. One student, Anna Dodd, describes how the experiences overseas are now influencing her future choices.

New humanities field school

UVic students are currently visiting historic sites in Europe in a field school examining migration, the refugee crisis and memorialization of the Holocaust. And the learning doesn't stop in Europe: they'll be at the Canadian Museum of Human Rights in mid August, then home to UVic for a symposium.

Scuba divers for fish count

A new research program led by marine ecologist John Volpe and grad student Stefania Gorgopa is a great opportunity for scuba divers to get involved as citizen scientists. The UVic researchers are turning to the local sport diving community for help conducting surveys of marine fish populations around Victoria and the Gulf Islands.

Two UVic PhD students win top Canadian award

An impassioned community volunteer who knows what it's like to live on the streets, and a legal scholar who wants to change how the legal system deals with Aboriginal land claims are two UVic students receiving three-year doctoral scholarships, the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation announced today.

Student projects raise $10,000 for good causes

Creating social change is slow, challenging and often discouraging-but a class of environmental studies students took up the challenge with surprising results. Students in ES 407, "Mindfulness, Sustainability and Social Change," undertook community action projects in groups that ended up raising over $10,000 for good causes locally and internationally.

Notable grads among 3,600 convocating

Spring convocation marks the successful completion of academic studies for 3,641 students who will receive their degrees, diplomas and certificates throughout the week to the applause of family, friends and loved ones. The nine ceremonies include the awarding of six honorary degrees.
