In memoriam: Bob McQueen

The Ring

Few members of the UVic community, past or present, could claim the level of dedication to—and impact on—the university as Bob McQueen, who passed away March 18 at the age of 81. McQueen arrived before we were UVic, joining Victoria College as its chief accountant on March 1, 1962, then becoming the newly-minted University of Victoria’s first Bursar in 1963. In the early 1980s, he was appointed UVic’s vice-president of finance and chief financial officer (CFO), where he remained until his retirement at the end of 1992—after over 30 years at UVic’s financial helm.

An app to help children with autism

The newly released Let’s Face It 2.0, a scrapbook app developed by the University of Victoria’s Centre for Autism Research Technology Education (CARTE) and now available free on iTunes, is a powerful educational tool for learning faces and recognizing emotions of the important people in the lives of children on the autism spectrum. “It is a selfie culture and I hope our app will be adopted by anyone who finds it useful,” says CARTE director and UVic psychology professor Jim Tanaka. “Parents and educators can create their own storybook from people and objects in their children’s lives.”

Theatre MFA student Graham McMonagle dresses for theatrical success While the majority of Department of Theatre graduate students are working professionals looking to further their academic credentials, Graham McMonagle is truly exceptional. A professional dancer for 20 years and the co-founder of Victoria’s Canadian Pacific Ballet company, which operated locally from 2007 to 2014, McMonagle lacked any pre-existing bachelor’s degree—which means he had to be granted “exceptional entry” status by both Graduate Studies and Senate.
