Learning the human history of the west coast

A six-week archaeology field school brought the promise and challenges of the Pacific west coast to life for 19 enthusiastic anthropology students this summer. The group traveled to the west coast of Vancouver Island to do research at ancient First Nations settlements, and to learn archaeological field techniques and environmental and cultural history from Tseshaht and Huu-ay-aht First Nations, professional archaeologists, and marine ecologists at the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre.

Royal Society Fellows 2016

One of Canada's best known music theorists and an internationally acclaimed expert on constitutional law are the University of Victoria's two newest Fellows of the Royal Society of Canada (RSC). Election to the academies of the RSC is Canada's highest academic honour and signals that the scholar, scientist or artist has made remarkable lifelong contributions to their field and to public life.

Fulbright to urban scholar

PhD candidate Kate Newman has been awarded a Fulbright Canada student grant to conduct research on urban politics in New York City.

Development of syphilis vaccine one step closer

Media release

An international team of scientists co-led by a University of Victoria researcher is one step closer to a vaccine for syphilis. Co-leaders UVic microbiologist Caroline Cameron and University of Washington’s Sheila Lukehart received a $2.3 million grant (USD) from the US National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases at the National Institutes of Health. The grant will allow them to continue to make headway on vaccine development.

Norah McRae received co-op award

Co-op and Career Executive Director Dr. Norah McRae has been awarded the 2016 Dr. Albert S. Barber Award from the Canadian Association for Co-operative Education (CAFCE).

Three geographers awarded for teaching and research excellence

The Canadian Association of Geographers announced Phil Dearden, Ian O'Connell and Simon Springer as the recipients of an award honouring research and teaching excellence.

In memoriam: Dallas Tomniuk

The Ring

Dallas Tomniuk, a valued staff member in the University Centre Farquhar Auditorium, passed away May 22 following a motorcycle accident in Tofino. He was a gentle, kind, good-humoured and giving member of the UVic team, and will be greatly missed by all who knew and worked with him.

Paving a path to med school

MacGillivray spent his childhood in Kamloops, playing hockey and discussing the finer points of science with his parents. Inspired by his experiences and conversations his father, who works as a science teacher, MacGillivray started at UVic as an undergraduate biology student, with the idea of being a wildlife veterinarian.

Dr. E. Patricia (“Paddy”) Tsurumi, historian and UVic professor emerita, died last month in her home on Hornby Island. Known for her thoroughly researched scholarship grounded in a strong sense of social justice, Paddy contributed to the history of women, education, colonialism and labour.

Melina Laboucan, a 33-year-old member of the Lubicon Cree First Nation, came to UVic's Indigenous Governance (IGov) master's program in 2013 with a clear purpose: to develop a solar energy project plan that would tackle Indigenous and environmental issues in her home town of Little Buffalo, Alberta.

Growing up sailing the South Pacific with his family, Bradley Clements learned the importance of communication between visitors and locals. The elements of mutual respect between his family and island inhabitants—learning about local culture and customs in real-world settings—stayed with Clements as a lifelong lesson.

International quest to spread inclusion

In the basement of the library, in a quiet area behind compact shelving, there’s a spot where students meet to secretly eat and talk. When Maram Alraygi discovered it, it became her favourite place to pray, providing a little spiritual break, she says in the midst of a full day of studying. And she liked sharing the hidden space with others. “I experienced the most blessed time there,” says the Master’s of Education grad.
