Engineering a campus culture shift

The Ring

Some people are born leaders, and convocating graduate Tiffany Yu undoubtedly falls into that category. Never one to shy away from a challenge, Yu saw a need in the Faculty of Engineering and set out to create change, becoming heavily involved with the Engineering Student Society (ESS). After attending the National Conference on Women in Engineering, Yu was inspired to create a women in engineering group at UVic. With help from faculty members and fellow ESS members Taylor Entz and Alisa Minderova, Leadership Through Diversity was born.

Our goal is to strengthen communications between faculty and staff in different areas, support UVic's culture of respect, inclusion and collaboration, build a sense of shared enterprise and improve campus communications. Environmental Studies at 40

From the very first plans for the Gordon Head campus, natural features have been valued as a defining force in UVic’s learning environment. And the Environmental Studies program, starting small with a single course in 1975, has grown substantially — not just alongside, but as a driver of green initiatives that have helped transform the campus into an internationally recognized leader in sustainability. Many of the practices that helped UVic become the only Canadian university to make the Princeton Review’s 2015 Green Honour Roll sprouted from Environmental Studies course projects, student initiatives and partnerships across the institution.

New HSD Indigenous student centre

Shauna Underwood remembers all too well what it was like to be an Indigenous student at UVic—trying to do well in her studies while also being a single parent of three children and having cultural responsibilities in her community. “I felt like I didn’t have anyone to go to. There were individual instructors who were great, but they are not always on campus or available,” said Underwood, now the Indigenous advisor at the newly opened Indigenous Student Support Centre (ISSC) in the Faculty of Human and Social Development.

Mystic Market to open Sept. 20

The University Centre cafeteria expansion and renovation is near completion, with the new eight-kiosk Mystic Market set to open its doors on Sept. 20.

Launch of Campus Checklist

Launching as a pilot later this month, a new biweekly Campus Checklist email newsletter will deliver essential information about our changing campus to all UVic faculty and staff. Providing briefs about new administrative processes, upcoming events and looming deadlines that are relevant to the broadest range of faculty and staff, the Campus Checklist aims to improve on-campus communication and reduce single-issue campus-wide “blast” emails.

Campus construction update

As the semester opens, a wide range of construction activities dot the campus, but four major projects stand out. Though temporary fences and construction work can be a minor inconvenience, these projects are also part of how the university is delivering on the promise of a better learning environment.

UVic in the summer

The Ring

“Summertime, and the livin’ is easy.” That old song comes naturally to mind while strolling UVic’s walkways, enjoying the sunshine and slower pace of summer on campus. No visible throngs of students rushing to the next class, shorter lineups at the sandwich bar, no circling the parking lots hoping for a spot to open up. Just a relaxed, laid-back time to regroup, catch up and chill out. Or not.

University Centre Caf makeover

The University Centre Cafeteria closed its doors on Dec. 13 to facilitate a major renovation and expansion. The eight-month project will see a shift from a cafeteria-style model to a market-style concept where food is freshly prepared before the customer. The new facility, to be named Mystic Market, will set a new standard in campus dining, creating a unique, West Coast dining experience for students, staff, faculty and visitors. The facility will introduce nine self-branded dining concepts to appeal to the diverse tastes of the campus community.

Used texts fund food bank

The Ring

This April the UVic Bookstore donated $3,000 to the University of Victoria Student Society Food Bank, with funds generated by donated student textbooks. The bookstore’s year-round textbook donation program provides students an opportunity to give back to fellow classmates. “We’ve accepted more than 1,700 used books this year,” says Katharine Wright, bookstore manager. “All the funds we receive from these books go directly to supporting on-campus student services.” All donated books are shipped to Better World Books, an organization that redistributes used textbooks for sale online, providing a percentage of the sales back to the Bookstore for student programs, such as the food bank.

UVic introduces Informed Dining

The University of Victoria is the first public institution to implement the Informed Dining program, as part of its overall commitment to healthy and active living.

Enhanced planning tools

The Ring

Recommendations will be presented to the campus Integrated Planning Committee this spring. In a post-secondary environment where enhancing the quality of academic programs is critical, it is more important than ever to align the university’s resources with its priorities. A working group has been struck to research and recommend enhanced planning tools that will support UVic decision-makers in academic and service units in reaching that goal.

Mystic Market construction update

Construction on Mystic Market, the new University Centre food facility, is going well and on track to open in fall 2014. University Food Services has revealed three of the nine food kiosks that will cater to the diverse tastes of the campus community:
