Campus cycling plan open house

The Ring

Following a year of consultation, the university’s inaugural Campus Cycling Plan is rolling to the finish line. Faculty, staff and students are invited to an open house in the University Centre lobby on Oct. 10 from 11 a.m.–2 p.m. to provide feedback before the plan is presented to the Campus Planning Committee and President for approval later this fall.

Trauma-informed training

UVic now a fair trade campus

The University of Victoria is now officially a Fair Trade Campus. The Canadian Fair Trade Network presented the designation certificate at an event at BiblioCafé on Feb. 21.

Planning underway for new student residence

UVic is moving ahead with the planning for a new residence facility, which will provide much-needed student housing for undergraduate and graduate students. The proposed residence will provide housing for an additional 600 students currently living off-campus.

Ethnobotany class revives plant on campus

Restored Legend Pole rededicated and blessed

The S,YEWE Legend Pole (also known as the Elliott pole) in the UVic quad was rededicated in a ceremony as part of this year’s Indigenous Week of Welcome. The pole, by carver Temosen (Charles Elliott) of the Tsartlip First Nation, was raised in 1990.

Engineering grad aspires to be a role model

When UVic's new civil engineering program launched in 2013 with a clear focus on sustainability and Indigenous communities, it caught the attention of Kear Porttris. The program's emphasis on making the best use of natural resources and lessening environmental burdens was immediately appealing.

Timely actions by many keep campus safe

Preparedness, notification and quick responses by campus community members pay off in arrest of suspect. Personal safety on UVic’s campus is a shared responsibility—a point demonstrated by events in 2016. Looking out for each other should be an everyday occurrence. And on top of preparedness and prevention, there are times when quick thinking and rapid responses also play a key role in keeping the campus safe.

Controlling invasive species on campus

A small army of volunteers is on the march to eradicate the spread of plant species that threaten native-growing flora on the UVic campus. Their project on invasive species management is one of four projects approved and funded this year by the Campus Sustainability Fund, which provides one-time allocations to campus projects that focus on water savings, sustainability awareness and learning opportunities.

New UVic mobile app

It's now a little harder to find an excuse for being late to class thanks to the University of Victoria's new mobile app. Students can personalize the app so it will display their course timetable with granular views showing class locations and times.

Planning institute recognizes Campus Plan

The Planning Institute of British Columbia (PIBC) announced its 2016 awards for excellence in planning at its annual conference on May 12, and recognized UVic for the planning process undertaken in 2015 leading to an update and approval of the new Campus Plan in January last year.

Campus Sustainability Fund

Do you have an idea that would make our campus more sustainable? There’s a new fund that can help make that idea a reality. The newly established $100,000 Campus Sustainability Fund is available to provide financial assistance for a variety of sustainability projects.

Changing campus drinking

The Ring

A project dedicated to changing the culture of drinking and other substance use among post-secondary students received a funding investment of $400,000 from the province this Feb. Co-led by the University of Victoria’s Centre for Addictions Research (CARBC) and the Canadian Mental Health Association BC Division, Changing the Culture of Substance Use (CCSU) is a long-term project that’s helping 11 campuses across BC access evidence about alcohol and substance use, assess the cultures on their campuses, decide on—and test—ways to influence their campus cultures, develop tools, and share those tools and experiences with other campuses.
