ARIEL expansion to produce rare isotopes

The UVic-led Advanced Rare Isotope Laboratory (ARIEL) at TRIUMF, Canada’s national laboratory for particle and nuclear physics, received $8.7 million from the BC Knowledge Development Fund in October. ARIEL expansion will lead to advances in medical imaging for diseases such as cancer, new technologies and materials for industry, and fresh insights into the fundamental nature of matter.

The contribution from the BC Knowledge Development Fund supports TRIUMF’s Advanced Rare Isotope Laboratory, a two-phase multidisciplinary research facility that will advance our fundamental understanding of the world in which we live.

UVic chemist Alex Brolo is working with the precious metal to provide a faster (and inexpensive) way to diagnose devastating viruses such as Zika and dengue fever.
