Since 2007, the UVic Provost’s Diversity Research Forum has been creating a space for critical conversations about diversity and social justice topics and community-engaged university scholarship. Online registration is now open for the tenth annual forum January 26 and 27.

Looking out for our heroes

The Ring

Firefighters, search and rescue workers and paramedics put their lives on the line for our safety every day, yet we tend to take their health for granted. “They’re so busy taking care of others, they sometimes don’t pay enough attention to taking care of themselves,” says Lynneth Stuart-Hill, an occupational physiologist in UVic’s School of Exercise Science, Physical and Health Education. Stuart-Hill’s research looks for ways to improve working conditions for first responders, whom she calls “occupational athletes.”

2016 at UVic was another great year of memorable moments and compelling news about people, projects, ideas, creativity and research. A world-first discovery about Stone Age tools, vital hints for the future of coral reefs in warming oceans and a dwarf planet that transfixed media across our globe are just some of the many captivating UVic stories over the past 12 months.

MAPs for Indigenous language learning

Adult learners are a "missing generation" in Indigenous language revitalization. The majority of fluent speakers are 70 years of age or older and although young children in immersion are speaking their languages in increasing numbers, many Indigenous adults aged 18 to 60 do not. Onowa McIvor (Indigenous education) and Peter Jacobs (linguistics) just wrapped up the first study of the Mentor-Apprentice Program for Indigenous adult language learners in BC.

Kids Talk project

Linguist Alexandra D’Arcy plans to address one of the most perplexing challenges in linguistics in a new study exploring how kids talk. She is looking for 30 more candidates for the Kids Talk project, focusing on the same cohort of children first as preschoolers, then in the playground.

Funding for UVic proteomics research

A project co-led by UVic biochemist Christoph Borchers will use more than $3.8 million in new funding from Genome Canada to make mouse models more powerful and meaningful to the study of health and disease. Also funded is UVic chemist Fraser Hof, who receives $238,800 to investigate “methylation”—the smallest form of biochemical control switch.

Three UVic Canada Research Chairs renewed

The search for new anti-cancer drugs, a deeper understanding of the economics of climate change, and fresh insights into the complex mathematics behind constantly changing systems and processes in our lives--these will continue to preoccupy the minds of three UVic researchers in the next several years thanks to recent renewals of their Canada Research Chairs.

Knowledge: cyber safe

As digital technology becomes increasingly integrated and more advanced, so too does the threat to cyber-security. UVic’s Information Security and Object Technology research lab has been addressing this threat since 1999. Coordinator and research engineer Issa Traoré admits it’s a constant battle to keep ahead of hacker expertise and adaptability.

Saanich Inlet research sheds new light on ocean dead zones

Every two weeks since September, a research team on the UVic research vessel MSV John Strickland has been venturing into the inlet to collect water samples at various depths (roughly 300 litres per day) to measure the levels of everything from dissolved gases and trace metals to phytoplankton and microbes.

Indigenous Law student wins top award

UVic Law PhD student Aaron Mills received the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Talent award—one of its five “Impact Awards”—at a ceremony in Ottawa today. Mills’ work is at the forefront of the movement to restore and revitalize Indigenous systems of law, one of the central recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission report.

UVic Law PhD student Aaron Mills was awarded the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) Talent award. The award is given to a single student each year across all the disciplines of the humanities and social sciences in Canada whose research "brings forward ideas that help us understand and improve the world around us." Mills' work is at the forefront of the movement to restore and revitalize Indigenous systems of law.

Project sheds light on ocean dead zones

Oceanographers from around the world are hoping to learn more about the science of “dead zones,” thanks to a UVic-led research project currently taking place in Saanich Inlet near Victoria.

2016 highly cited researchers

It’s always gratifying to have data-driven, third party recognition of UVic's global research impact. Thomson Reuters' 2016 list of the world’s most highly cited researchers includes climate statistician Francis Zwiers, of the Pacific Climate Impacts Consortium, as well as two previously recognized researchers: mechanical engineer Yang Shi and business professor Roy Suddaby.

Detecting invasive species

The Ring

A research group at the University of Victoria can now detect the presence of invasive species in water or soil using environmental DNA—giving humans a better chance at defending the ecological balance of delicate habitat.

Alcohol and prostate cancer

A study by researchers at the Centre for Addictions Research at UVic and Australia's National Drug Research Institute at Curtin University provides new evidence of a significant relationship between alcohol consumption and the risk of prostate cancer: the more you drink, the greater your risk.

WWI database now at UVic

Media release

The Canadian Great War Project, curated by a Canadian living in Ohio and part of a PhD student's research at UVic, will now be housed in UVic Libraries, with a new look set to be unveiled Nov. 11. The project, founded 10 years ago by Marc Leroux, contains digital data on more than 176,000 soldiers, nurses and chaplains.
