Global Reputation and Rankings Project

In September 2017, President Jamie Cassels launched a Global Reputation and Rankings Project to ensure that UVic's global impact is being accurately assessed by international university rankings such as QS and Times Higher Education.

Virtual Ninja Project

Research culminating in a Street Fighter tournament Jan. 26 at UVic put a different spin on video game culture. Humanities Dean Chris Goto-Jones, who started the project in 2010, has found that far from causing more violence, fighting games are a form of martial art that can make us better people.

BC budget supports UVic initiatives

The Ring

On Feb. 20 the provincial government tabled Budget 2018 which includes support of a UVic law program that will be the first of its kind in the world, funding for tuition waivers for former youth in care and a change in the policies for financing of student housing, which will help with the construction of a new UVic residence.

UVic now a fair trade campus

The University of Victoria is now officially a Fair Trade Campus. The Canadian Fair Trade Network presented the designation certificate at an event at BiblioCafé on Feb. 21.

Managed alcohol programs: out from under the radar

The Ring

The practice of providing alcohol to people with severe alcohol dependence is a complex and sometimes controversial approach to harm-reduction. For the first time, a peer-reviewed journal has compiled the largest collection of peer-reviewed articles on these managed alcohol programs, led by UVic's Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research.

Planning underway for new student residence

UVic is moving ahead with the planning for a new residence facility, which will provide much-needed student housing for undergraduate and graduate students. The proposed residence will provide housing for an additional 600 students currently living off-campus.

US grad student part of sharks study

The Ring

PhD biology candidate Amy Teffer from New England is one of more than six dozen authors, including UVic fisheries ecologist Francis Juanes, of a new study on the foraging habits of the world’s shark populations. She calls UVic “the obvious choice” for her doctorate.

A means to measure

How much does alcohol cost? Think beyond the price of a bottle of wine; how many deaths per year are due to alcohol-related colon cancer? How about hospitalizations due to impaired driving accidents? To calculate these costs, PhD student Adam Sherk developed the International Model of Alcohol Harms and Policies, or InterMAHP.

Ethnobotany class revives plant on campus

Following in the footsteps of world-renowned ethnobotanist Nancy Turner, ethnobotany PhD candidate Fiona Hamersley Chambers has led environmental studies students across the campus since 1999, using it as a living classroom as they study the relationship between people and plants.

Increasing visual literacy for first-year students

The Department of Art History and Visual Studies is broadening its first-year opportunities with both a new classroom and a new class concept. AHVS 101—a seminar focusing on art, images and experience—launched last month and anchored in the department’s new art collections classroom.

Real students. Real money. Real-life experience.

The Ring

Students are getting real-life experience investing $500,000 on UVic's behalf while learning how to make investment decisions that incorporate environmental, social and governance factors. In a new fourth-year course, students manage the funds in close coordination with academic and industry support to learn about investing responsibly as well as fiduciary duty.

Sale of Dunsmuir completed

The Ring

All conditions have been met to complete the transfer of the Dunsmuir lands from UVic to new ownership. Homewood Health acquired a lodge building and 28 acres of forest and road, and the Pauquachin First Nation's Bok'ec'en Xaxe (Sacred) Society acquired the remaining 72 acres of woodlands and wetlands.

Learning is at the heart of Phoenix plays

The Ring

Just like a family, Department of Theatre students know how to pull together during a time of need. While audiences watch a play for enjoyment, each Phoenix Theatre production is a hands-on learning opportunity for up to 150 students enrolled in 10 to 15 different courses. Such is the case with "Crimes of the Heart," running Feb. 15–24.

United Way campaign wrap-up

Thanks to generous donations from individuals and well-attended campus events, the fundraising tally for the 2017 UVic United Way campaign is almost $229,000.

Alumni Week festivities Feb. 1–7

The Ring

More than a dozen events—including talks, awards, athletic events and musical entertainment— highlight the University of Victoria’s annual Alumni Week, Feb. 1–7, a community celebration that focuses on the economic, social and cultural impact of our graduates locally and around the world.

Funding strengthens protein research

The Ring

Improved diagnosis and treatment of a range of diseases such as cancer and Alzheimer's is the goal of more than $18 million in funding awarded last month to two national platforms in which UVic plays a key role.
