Lorna Williams receives Indspire Award

The Ring

Wanosts’a7 Lorna Williams, Lil’watul from Mount Currie BC, is being honoured with a 2018 Indspire Award for her contributions to Indigenous education. At UVic, the Professor Emerita Williams co-designed and developed three degree programs in collaboration with Indigenous communities: the bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Indigenous language revitalization, and the Counselling in Indigenous Communities master’s degree program.

Impact of noise on killer whales

Three UVic researchers have been awarded a total $935,000 in federal funding to study the impact of underwater noise on endangered southern resident killer whales and the chinook salmon they depend on for almost 80 per cent of their diet.

Elaine Humphrey named MSA fellow

Elaine Humphrey, lab manager for UVic's Advanced Microscopy Facility since 2009, has been named a Fellow of the Microscopy Society of America (Class of 2018) for her "significant contributions to the advancement of the field of microscopy and microanalysis."

Police integration on ACT health teams

The Ring

The new study by UVic psychologists Catherine Costigan and Erica Woodin on Assertive Community Treatment (ACT) teams, first requested last summer by Island Health and VicPD, is now complete and shows that vulnerable populations benefit from police integration into the ACT health care model.

Salal berry benefits

The Ring

UVic plant biologist Peter Constabel has found that that salal—a wild berry common to coastal areas of western North America—is an antioxidant superstar, packed with higher levels of health-promoting plant chemicals than most other berries out there.

Community-Engaged Learning Grants

The Ring

Six UVic faculty members leading projects that strengthen community partnerships and provide engaged-learning opportunities for students have been awarded $30,000 in Community-Engaged Learning (CEL) Grants. Approximately 280 to 480 students will benefit from these curriculum development projects.

Ideafest returns, March 5–10

The Ring

Ideafest, UVic's popular week-long festival of research, innovation and creative activity, runs March 5–10, with 40-plus outstanding events for you to choose from. This year's festival features exhibits, performances, a video night, tours and a wide range of speakers on topics ranging from climate change and chamber music to Indigenous law and antibiotic resistance. All events free and open to the public.

Trauma-informed training

Sexualized and domestic violence can be difficult subjects to talk about, but 300 members of the UVic and Greater Victoria communities came together on campus in February to do exactly that.

Passion for people

Geographer Jutta Gutberlet and psychologist Jim Tanaka have devoted their careers to helping others—especially children and families and those who live in poverty. As the 2018 recipients of the Provost's Engaged Scholar Award, their commitment to communities locally and internationally will be celebrated at a March ceremony.

World's first Indigenous law degree

The Ring

A new law program at UVic is the world's first to combine the intensive study of both Indigenous and non-Indigenous law, enabling people to work fluently across the two realms. Students will graduate with two professional degrees, one in Canadian common law (Juris Doctor or JD) and one in Indigenous legal orders (Juris Indigenarum Doctor or JID).

Budget 2018 has the largest investment in science and university research in Canadian history to support researchers and their facilities.
