Canada’s 2019 federal budget, unveiled March 19, also included substantial funding for TRIUMF, Canada’s particle accelerator centre, which was co-founded by UVic 50 years ago and continues to be a substantial nexus for UVic-led research.

Site prep begins for new student housing

Although construction for the university’s student housing and dining project won’t kick off until 2020, early preparation work at the site will begin this spring and summer. Starting in May, watch for selective deconstruction, road and utility work around the Cadboro Commons and SUB buildings.

Kelp forests are a rich ecosystem critical to many species such as herring and salmon, but researchers know that kelp is decreasing in some areas of the Pacific Northwest. Canada's federal, provincial and territorial governments could be doing a much better job at implementing policies that reduce alcohol-related harms, according to new reports from the UVic's Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research (CISUR).

Heavy snow, not light work

February's heavy snowfall was exceptional in more ways than one on campus. Even while most people enjoyed a “snow day” when the campus was closed late afternoon Monday, Feb. 11 and the following day, there were those who walked, carefully drove or carpooled to work so that residence students got fed, roads were plowed, pathways were cleared and payroll got processed.

Patrick Lane: Rest in Poetry

The Ring

Award-winning poet and novelist Patrick Lane passed away on March 7 at age 79, the result of a heart attack. His publisher, McClelland & Stewart, made the announcement, calling Lane “one of Canada's most renowned writers” —a claim few would refute. His passing made headlines in media outlets nationwide.
