During a two-week stay in Canada, UVic geography faculty and three Maasai from Tanzania exchanged cultural knowledge and practices with First Nations from the T’souke and Tla-o-qui-aht on Vancouver Island to the Selkirk and Carcross-Tagish peoples of the Yukon.

2019 Leiden Rankings

One of UVic’s longstanding research strengths was confirmed by the 2019 Leiden Rankings: UVic-based researchers wrote a higher proportion of top-performing papers based on international collaborations than any other university in North America.

National STEAM award goes to UVic math student

The Ring

Tyra Cockney-Goose, a second-year UVic math student, became the first Inuit to be awarded a national STEAM Horizon Award this spring. The award, supported by three national museums and NSERC, among others, honours youth who promote positive changes throughout their communities using science, technology, engineering, arts, and math.

The future of intelligent transportation

Lin Cai is designing networking solutions to self-driving vehicles by creating a safe and seamless wireless network that connects vehicles, roadside infrastructure, pedestrians and the “cloud.” Cai is the recipient of a 2019 E.W.R. Steacie Memorial Fellowship, awarded May 6 in Ottawa by NSERC.

Student Ambassadors boost student emergency fund

Using profits from selling flowers and frames at convocation, this year's cohort of Student Ambassadors is donating $1,000 to the Student Emergency Fund, which supports students who are in financial crises and need immediate assistance. An anonymous alumni donor surprised the group—matching their contribution to the Student Emergency Fund this year, making their total gift $2,000.
