When Paige Quinn first moved to Vancouver Island to start her undergraduate degree, she intended on becoming an elementary school teacher. She had always loved working with children and grew up with a mother who taught grade one. But taking one of UVic's Exercise Science, Physical Health and Education classes hooked her on the program. She graduates this month.

Born and raised in Taiyuan, a mid-sized city in China's central Shanxi province, Chen went to a local international high school before looking for overseas post-secondary options. Corrina Sparrow wanted more out of her post-secondary education experience. While she was excited for the learning, she yearned for something she believed post-secondary education could help her develop: a historic understanding and a stronger sense of Indigenous identity. Indigenous law program launched

In an emotional ceremony on Sept. 25 to launch the world’s first Indigenous law program, Elders, national and provincial leaders, scholars and others from the UVic community gathered in First Peoples House to welcome the first cohort of 26 students who have come from across Canada to attend the program.

A coastal field school on Tl'ches

More than 60 years ago, the last Coast Salish residents of Tl'ches—the Chatham and Discovery islands off the eastern coast of Oak Bay—left to live on the Songhees Reserve in Esquimalt. But this summer, Lekwungen Coast Salish Elder Sellemah/Joan Morris, who grew up on Tl'ches, helped UVic and Songhees students in a UVic field school see the islands through their eyes—superimposing past and present.

Place-based learning at Ye'yumnuts

As part of the Ye'yumnuts project initiated by Cowichan Tribes in 2017, UVic anthropologist Brian Thom and his graduate students were invited to partner with Elders, school district staff and others to commemorate an ancient ancestral site in the Cowichan Valley and to develop interpretive materials and school curriculum resources.

Indigenous language revitalization builds co-op student's career

UVic Indigenous studies student Kevin Perkins is wrapping up three co-op work terms with a First Nations-run Crown Corporation that supports the revitalization of Indigenous languages, culture and heritage in BC. He’s also part of the cohort of students who pushed UVic’s co-op and career program past 85,000 co-op term placements since 1976.

3M National Student Fellowships

Three of 10 prestigious 3M National Student Fellowships have been awarded to students in UVic's Faculty of Social Sciences. Cara Samuel (psychology), Maxwell Nicholson (economics) and Michael Graeme (anthropology and environmental studies) join seven others to become Canada's 3M fellowship recipients for 2018.

Spring Convocation 2018 honorary degrees

Five inspirational citizens will receive an honorary degree—the university's highest honour—at the upcoming spring Convocation ceremonies.
