CAPI Senior Research Fellow and former Canadian Ambassador to Thailand, Cambodia, and Laos, Phil Calvert, recently provided expert commentary on the evolving US-China trade war on CBC national radio program "The House," indicating that an escalation of measures could have negative consequences for Canada:

A trade war between our two largest trading partners cannot go well for us.

Nevertheless, despite the bellicose political rhetoric between the two sides, Calvert is hopeful that there is room for negotiation:

I would be very surprised if US officials aren't engaging with Chinese officials bi-laterally and formally.
