Project: The occupational experiences of migrant workers in the eldercare sector in Singapore and Taiwan

My research project sets out to investigate the occupational experiences of migrant workers in the eldercare sector in Singapore and Taiwan. My central questions revolve around the public treatment of eldercare work and its workforce, which consists of both institutional healthcare workers in nursing homes and live-in Foreign/Migrant Domestic Workers (F/MDWs) in the private homes of employers. Given that both countries are East Asian Tiger states which enjoy an international reputation for their respective ‘economic miracles’, my project is interested in showing how the two case studies compare and contrast in terms of their available care support systems and the experiences of the caregiver/nursing workforce. There will also be a discussion of some nuances of the Confucian custom of filial piety when applied to decisions of care arrangements and social welfare policy, which both governments have deployed in rather different ways.
