Governance and administration
The University of Victoria operates under the authority of the University Act and is governed by a Board of Governors and a Senate.
The Board of Governors is responsible for the management, administration and control of the property, revenue, business and affairs of the university.
The Senate is responsible for the academic governance of the university. This includes matters related to libraries, faculties, departments, courses of instruction, awards, exhibitions, admissions, student appeals, and the granting of degrees (including honorary degrees, diplomas and certificates).
The role of the administration, headed by the President is to lead and manage the affairs of the university in accordance with the University Act and the policies established by the university.

Jamie Cassels, QC, became the seventh President and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Victoria in 2013.
Responsibilities
As the Chief Executive Officer of the university, the President is responsible for providing overall leadership to the university. It is the President's responsibility to fulfill the vision and mission of the university.
The President directs the operation of the university, including its academic work, business affairs, alumni relations, government relations and engagement with the broader community.

Responsibilities
The Vice-President Academic and Provost (VPAC) is responsible for providing academic leadership to the university and leading UVic's integrated planning process. VPAC is committed to ensuring outstanding experiences for students and fostering an environment of academic excellence and innovation.
The VPAC office is committed to:
- integrating teaching, learning, research and civic engagement across disciplines
- advancing research-inspired teaching in our classrooms
- recruiting and retaining faculty of the highest national and international standards

Positions reporting to the vice-president include 12 deans, the university librarian, and the director of institutional planning.
Through four associate vice-presidents, the portfolio includes responsibility for the Office of the Registrar, Enrolment Services, Student Services, Campus Services, Athletics and Recreation, Office of Indigenous Affairs, Co-operative Education and Career Services, Office of International Affairs, Equity and Diversity Adviser, and the Learning and Teaching Centre.

Responsibilities
The role of the Vice-President Research (VPR) is to promote and facilitate research and creative activities at the University of Victoria. To do this, they:
- develop and implement strategic plans to support a rich research environment
- create and oversee sound research policies and procedures that meet the highest ethical and regulatory standards
- work with potential research funders to enhance available resources
- promote the mobilization of knowledge created through research for societal benefit
- seek to enhance the reputation of the university through the excellence of the research conducted by its faculty and students

Responsibilities
The Vice-President Finance and Operations is a member of the executive group and Chief Financial Officer at the University of Victoria.
The Vice-President leads a large and varied portfolio that includes financial, human resources, computing and systems services, security and physical plant functions of the university.
The Vice-President is responsible, through department directors, for the overall quality of services, meeting legal and reporting requirements within portfolio areas, deploying resources, and planning improvements that enhance the university's ability to carry out its mission and strategic plan.

Responsibilities
The Office of the University Secretary serves as the corporate secretariat for the university's governing bodies - the Board of Governors and the Senate. The office is the repository for information on all matters relating to these bodies.
The Office of the University Secretary is responsible for coordinating, facilitating and recording the activities of the university's foundations and senior advisory committees. The office is also responsible for matters related to privacy and access to information, equity and human rights, policy and elections.

In accordance with the University Act, the Board of Governors is responsible for the management, administration and control of the property, revenue, business and affairs of the university. This fifteen-member body consists of the chancellor, the president, two elected faculty members, one elected staff member, two students elected from the university's undergraduate or graduate student societies, and eight members appointed by the Lieutenant Governor in Council.

Murray Farmer
University Chancellor
Murray Farmer was installed as Chancellor of the University of Victoria on June 15, 2009. His term as Chancellor runs until December 31, 2014.
Murray Farmer graduated from the University of Victoria in 1968 with a bachelor's degree in economics. A registered quantity surveyor, he completed the Harvard Business School's owner/president executive education program.
Mr. Farmer has long been a supporter of the university, and in 2007 was the recipient of the UVic Alumni Association's Distinguished Alumni Award for Lifetime Achievement. He was appointed to the UVic Board of Governors in 2002, serving as its chair from 2007 until his term ended in 2008. Elected to the position of chancellor by the convocation, his three-year term commenced January 1, 2009.
