Professional Employees Association

PEA

The Professional Employees Association (PEA) chapter at UVic comprises administrative and academic professionals. This group includes 850 employees (770 FTEs).

The university previously reached a two-year agreement with this local under the 2010 mandate. That agreement expired on June 30, 2012. UVic and the PEA initiated bargaining on a new agreement in the spring of 2012 under the 2012 “cooperative gains” mandate.  On Oct. 12, 2012 the parties reached agreement on a tentative memorandum of settlement, which the parties unanimously recommended to their respective principals for ratification. The association ratified on Nov. 15 and the MOA was ratified by the University Board of Governors for at the end of November.

Dec. 3, 2012

Update Dec. 3, 1:00 p.m.

This update is further to the Oct. 19 bulletin where it was reported that negotiators with the Professional Employees Association (PEA) and the University of Victoria reached a tentative agreement on a new two-year contract. The deal includes an across-the-board wage increase for PEA members of two per cent retroactive to July 1, 2012 and a further two per cent on July 1, 2013. The agreement has recently been ratified by the PEA and the university.

The PEA represents approximately 850 administrative and academic professionals at the university. These employees work as counsellors, instructors, system analysts, fundraisers, scientific technicians, engineers, advisers and more.

The tentative agreement has been reached under the provincial government’s “cooperative gains” mandate. The previous contract was also for two years and expired June 30, 2012 and was concluded under the provincial “net-zero” mandate.

Oct. 11, 2012: PEA and UVic reach tentative agreement

Negotiators with the Professional Employees Association (PEA) and the University of Victoria have reached a tentative agreement on a new two-year contract. The deal includes an across-the-board wage increase for PEA members of 2 per cent retroactive to July 1, 2012 and a further 2 per cent on July 1, 2013. The agreement is now subject to ratification by both parties over the coming weeks.

The PEA represents approximately 850 administrative and academic professionals at the university. These employees work as counsellors, instructors, system analysts, fundraisers, scientific technicians, engineers, advisers and more.

The tentative agreement has been reached under the provincial government’s cooperative gains mandate. The previous contract was also for two years and expired June 30, 2012 and was concluded under the provincial net-zero mandate.

The PEA will be presenting details of the agreement to its members prior to the ratification vote.

Sept. 5, 2012

The parties exchanged proposals on May 29 and bargained for six days in June. Progress has been made on language and on June 18 the university tabled its opening wage proposal. After an agreed-to recess for the summer, the parties are returning to the bargaining table and are booking dates through September and into October.

While the PEA has not taken a strike vote and is therefore not in a position to serve the university with strike notice or take job action, its members have the right to refuse to cross a legal picket line.
