Our bargaining principles

The University of Victoria is one of the top research-intensive universities in Canada and is widely recognized for leadership in research, scholarship, inspired teaching and community engagement. The university recognizes the vital role our outstanding faculty, librarians and staff play in creating and sustaining that reputation.

In common with many other universities in British Columbia and Canada, UVic is seeking to renew collective agreements and our faculty framework agreement in the context of challenging fiscal circumstances and constrained government funding due to the global economic downturn and slow recovery.

We are also currently transitioning between two provincial bargaining mandates—the 2010 "net zero" mandate and the new 2012 "cooperative gains" mandate. Information about both is available at the Public Sector Employers' Council website. These mandates have been established in order to protect the province's ability to fund vital public services such as healthcare and education.

With that backdrop, the following principles will guide negotiations with all unions and associations at UVic in 2012:

  • Good faith bargaining
  • Fiscal responsibility
  • Respectful communication
  • Promotion of mutual interests
  • Recognition of our part in the broader community.
